  • Today we applaud Lurie Children’s renowned leader of the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Arun Gosain. Currently the President of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, in September he also became President of the American Academy of Pediatric Plastic Surgeons. At the same time, he was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons. An internationally known lecturer and mentor, Dr. Gosain is an expert in treating craniofacial and vascular anomalies, reanimation for facial paralysis and the correction of cleft lip and cleft palate. A leader in research, Dr. Gosain also helms the Gosain Plastic Surgery and Craniofacial Biology Laboratory, examining mechanisms by which to improve the outcomes of tissue expansion in children and in patients who suffer from tissue compromise, in addition to exploring how tissue deformation impacts cell responsiveness. Bravo, Dr. Gosain! Hear Dr. Gosain explain his approach to comprehensive cleft lip and palate care in this episode of Lurie Children’s Precision podcast: https://lnkd.in/grvKfZ_d

  • Please join us in congratulating Dr. Elizabeth Alpern on her recent endowment?– named the George M. Eisenberg Professor of Pediatrics. Study finds that nearly three out of four #children in Chicago had no swim lessons during the #pandemic, with 85% Black and 82% Hispanic kids disproportionately impacted. Michelle Macy, MD, MS, emphasized the need for a targeted outreach and expanded programs that offer swimming lessons to older elementary and middle school age kids as a way to address the gaps. https://lnkd.in/gC5vS_au Ann & Robert H. • Today is a difficult day for many, in our families, communities, and across the globe. And while it can be overwhelming to reflect on events that continue to impact us deeply, it’s important to remember a simple action we can take inside our homes during periods of crisis: connect with our children about conflicts they see happening around them and make space for their range of feelings and reactions. In the blog below, Lurie Children’s mental health experts offer guidance on how to navigate conversations around tragedies, leading with empathy and kindness, and why they are necessary during these times. https://lnkd.in/gdJcJjz3

  • Today on October 4, we recognize TEN-4 Day, a movement to raise awareness about child abuse. TEN-4-FACESp is an acronym to help medical professionals identify bruising patterns in children under 4 years of age that may be more likely due to physical abuse than accidental injury. TEN-4-FACESp is a clinical decision rule developed and validated by Lurie Children's Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce and colleagues, and has since been adopted by states across the country. The rule focuses on bruises to the torso, ears and neck (TEN), and the frenulum (the tissue that runs in a thin line between the lips and gums), angle of the jaw, cheeks, eyelids and subconjunctivae (the white part of the eyes), – the FACES. The number 4 represents infants 4 months and younger with any bruise, anywhere, and “p” represents the presence of patterned bruising. The tool is to help highlight areas that are more prone to physical abuse, if there is not a good history or mechanism to explain the injury. In 2023, Lurie Children’s launched an app called LCAST (Lurie Children's Child Injury Plausibility Assessment Support Tool), the brainchild of Dr. Mary Clyde Pierce and Sr. Research Scientist Kim Kaczor, who developed it in partnership with Slingshot and BioDigital. LCAST utilizes distinguishing characteristics of bruising to aid evidence-based decision making. It is in no way meant to supplant judgment. Importantly, LCAST cannot be used to diagnose abuse, but rather functions as a screening tool to help identify red flags for abuse that may call for further evaluation. • Join Lurie Children’s in celebrating Spina Bifida Awareness Month by supporting our young warriors! Meet Alex, a first grader with enough determination to conquer the world. Alex was born with spina bifida, a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s spinal column does not close correctly. Alex has been seeing a team of neurosurgeons, urologists, orthopedic specialists and more since before birth at Lurie Children’s Spina Bifida Center, allowing him to get all the care he needs in one place. His specialists have helped his family track his progress, learn to advocate for Alex and have encouraged him to reach his full potential. Alex has never let his differences stop him from being a kid. “He always finds ways to adapt his sports,” his mom Vanessa said. Alex is an avid sports fan and plays wheelchair basketball and baseball. He was inspired by watching the Paralympics this summer and hopes to play wheelchair basketball at the Paralympics one day. Alex also loves meeting new people and trying new things and picked up a new skill this summer – fishing! Alex has so much to look forward to thanks to his community and his specialists at Lurie Children’s. Learn more about spina bifida care at Lurie Children’s: https://lnkd.in/gRe6hPtm.

  • Lurie Children’s is proud to share our efforts via the All Hands Health Network (AHHN) were recently spotlighted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). AHHN is one of seven awardees across the country who have been empowered to address the mission of the CMS Integrated Care for Kids (InCK) Model. The model is testing different ways Medicaid can pay for care to support all the needs of children, both inside and outside of the doctor’s office. AHHN is an integrated network that will serve 42,000 children on Medicaid living in Chicago’s under-resourced neighborhoods, namely Belmont-Cragin and Austin. AHHN aims to expand children’s access to quality primary care, specialty care, and behavioral health services. Check out the article and video below which highlight AHHN Resource Coordinator Gloria Rodriguez and Lurie Children’s Emergency Medicine Physician and AHHN Medical Director/Clinical Quality Chair Dr. Karen Sheehan.
