Big thanks to DMARC (Des Moines Area Religious Council) and Ankeny Service Center for teaming up with the ARL to make a huge impact for pets and their families. Thanks to incredible teamwork, the ARL was able to accept a generous donation of 35,000 lbs of fresh, refrigerated pet food from Cargill in Albert Lea, MN — enough to provide 60,000 meals to pets in need! Both DMARC and Ankeny Service Center stepped up with the storage capacity needed to make this large-scale donation possible. We are incredibly grateful to have such strong partners in our community. This food will be distributed through the ARL’s Pet Food Pantry, across the DMARC Food Pantry Network and through the Ankeny Service Center pantry, reaching pet families who need it most. Collaborations like this show the true power of working together—combining resources, expertise, and compassion to serve more pets and people across our community. #ChangingLivesTogether

We are so excited to share a heartwarming story about one of our residents, Michael, and his beloved cat, Billie. Last fall, when Michael lost his housing, he faced the heartbreaking decision to take Billie to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Inc. as he entered shelter. For many individuals facing housing insecurity, being separated from their pets, often their closest source of comfort, can be incredibly difficult. After moving into the YSHC, things took a wonderful turn. While scrolling through the #ARL site at our #TuesdayNightDinner, Michael spotted a familiar face, Billie! Thanks to the amazing partnership between the #ARL, Michael’s case manager, and our YSHC team, we were able to confirm it was indeed Billie, who had been lovingly fostered for the past three months. Michael completed the steps to have a companion animal in his new home, and this week, Billie was officially reunited with him! When Billie arrived, the foster family shared how she never let anyone hold her like she did with Michael — curling up in his arms, right where she belongs. We are so grateful to the ARL, the caring foster family, and everyone who helped make this full-circle moment possible. Welcome home, Billie! #EveryoneDeservesAPlaceToCallHome

CHECK THIS OUT: When a bill that made huge improvements to Iowa’s companion animal cruelty laws was passed in 2020, one thing that wasn’t included in the final bill was making animal torture an automatic felony.
