In 2023, US shelters and rescues took in 296,000 more dogs than in 2021. This is a 10% increase from 2021 and a 3% increase from 2022, but still represents a 6% decrease from pre-pandemic levels. These increases have primarily been driven by strays, which made up 46% of canine intakes.
