The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) influence everything from school meals to public health recommendations, making it essential that they are rooted in science. Animal proteins provide vital nutrients that aren’t easily replaced, yet recent recommendations overlook this reality. In December, an advisory committee tasked with providing input for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommended Americans eat less meat and switch to other foods the committee recommends as protein sources. Unfortunately, this recommendation fails to take into account the scientific evidence that animal-source foods provide critical nutrition that is not easily replaced from other sources. The DGA shape national nutrition policies and influence everything from school meals to public health recommendations, and it is critical that they reflect the best available science - science that confirms the unique role of meat, milk, and eggs in healthy diets.
