Findings from our 2024 Unheard Third Survey of Housing and Economic Security show that New Yorkers broadly support rent stabilization and Good Cause eviction protections. Notably, a majority of respondents—across party lines—expressed support for rent stabilization policies, including a significant share of Republicans. This strong support comes as many New Yorkers continue to struggle with housing insecurity. We found that 38% of respondents faced housing insecurity, including difficulty affording rent or mortgage payments and threats of eviction, while 25% reported housing quality issues like lack of heat or clean water. These findings highlight the real-life impact of housing instability and the growing recognition of tenant protections as a necessary policy solution. ?? • A partnership between ANHD and Urban Design Forum, the Local Center is a program that equips neighborhood leaders with technical assistance, funding, and connections to create more just and joyful public spaces across the city. Over the past couple of years, the Local Center's Rooted Cultures cohort has focused on cultural representation in public spaces. We have supported projects that expanded access to Afro-Caribbean and Latinx foods in Staten Island, reconnected Bronx communities divided by a highway, and built more community safety in parks and plazas. Through videos, toolkits, and vision plans, the teams documented their processes, what they learned, and their ideas for what’s next. Visit the Local Center Rooted Cultures website to watch videos and learn more about each of these projects: https://bit.ly/3EWYNXr

  • Rising costs of property insurance have posed a major challenge to nonprofit and government-subsidized affordable housing developers, including many ANHD members. ANHD Senior Campaign Organizer Will Depoo is quoted in this Gothamist article about the Milford Street Captive Insurance Company, a collective of landlords who have pooled their resources to create an insurance collective, or "captive", and lower their costs. The Empire State Development Corporation is issuing a $2 million low-interest loan to the collective:

  • We'd like to thank Zillow for their partnership and support in hosting our first ever 2025 Caucus Weekend Brick by Brick Housing Reception during the annual NYS Association of Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, & Asian Legislators (NYSABPHAL) Legislative Conference. We brought together dozens of individuals who are leading the work in creating a more equitable New York. We spent the evening at the Renaissance Hotel in Albany, building community power and honoring Assembly Member Chantel Jackson and State Senator Cordell Cleare, who have been pivotal partners in our movement. We centered affordable housing and the work we're collectively doing to address this increasingly critical issue. Thank you to Zillow, to Alyssa Jorge for helping us put the event together, and to all who joined us!

  • The reported cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)'s workforce are a direct attack on the housing and homelessness crisis nationwide. ANHD strongly opposes these cuts. HUD is essential for funding affordable housing, supporting homelessness prevention, expanding homeownership and stabilizing communities. Cutting half of HUD’s staff will debilitate efforts to address the affordable housing shortage and help those most in need, including in New York City. This will worsen the housing crisis, hitting vulnerable populations hardest. Across the nation, cities and states are struggling to keep up with skyrocketing rents, out of reach mortgages, and the growing homelessness crisis. In NYC, this decision could delay critical housing programs, stall efforts to support our unhoused neighbors and stabilize NYCHA, and prevent needed protections for low- to moderate-income households. This is a step backward at the worst possible time. We need more support, not less. We demand HUD and the federal government prioritize the fight against housing insecurity and homelessness—not dismantle the resources needed to win that fight. #AffordableHousing #HousingCrisis #EndHomelessness #SupportHUD
