This week, we’re sharing insights from our talented team about their favorite A-Y projects and what engineering means to them. We are starting the week with Electrical Designer, Samuel Sondreal! Sam says, "One of my first projects at A-Y was renovating Whitney Hall at Beloit College. It was incredible to see the transformation of the existing dormitory. Baker’s Place in Madison, WI is the city’s first mass timber high-rise. Mass timber construction offers a strong, low-carbon alternative to steel and concrete, but its hard wooden surfaces lack acoustical absorption, making it difficult to satisfy strict building code requirements for STC and IIC. The design team utilized an innovative acoustical solution: USG Levelrock? Brand SAM-N25 Supreme, a lightweight, low-profile sound attenuation mat for mass timber, covered with USG Levelrock? Brand 2500 Floor Underlayment. This system helped the project meet its unique needs and delivered the required acoustical performance at a reduced thickness and simplified installation.
