Are you missing having a solar eclipse this week? We simulated an eclipse with a solar simulator. In addition to making fun animations, this system has 180 LED heads that can test solar cells from 1 junction up to 5 junctions in panels up to 1.7 x 1.4 meters. The animation below shows the spatial control that comes from over 16,000 independently controlled light source channels. The spectral control allows the testing of many different multi-junction cell technologies, and the spatial control allows the LED heads to work together for best-in-class spatial uniformity over any large area. And remember – don’t stare at a fully powered solar simulator without your eclipse glasses. #eclipse #solareclipse #simulation #solarsimulator
关于我们
Angstrom Designs is a diverse group of engineers who focus on systems design for automated instrumentation, control, test and measurement. Angstrom Designs is currently focusing on the next generation of solar simulation technology for NASA and the aerospace industry, the programmable light emitting diode solar simulator, pLEDSS. pLEDSS technology enables rapid calibration and automated acquisition of solar cell and string performance with more capability and flexibility than the current state of practice. Angstrom Designs also conducts high-altitude balloon tests of solar cells and other space hardware in the near-space environment.

Supporting NASA’s Artemis program requires successfully applying pioneering technologies to overcome challenges. For example, Gateway — the first lunar orbit space station — will consist of the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) supplying 60 kilowatts of solar power. Testing PPE’s advanced solar cell technology is a challenge — and is impossible using conventional solar simulation technologies. Fortunately, our programmable LED solar simulator (pLEDss) technology tests and qualifies current and future advanced solar cell technologies. An essential element of NASA’s Artemis program — which will establish a long-term foothold on the moon — is to launch and construct Gateway, a moon-orbiting space station. Gateway is powered by the Power and Propulsion Element (PPE), which relies on large arrays of advanced solar cells to generate 60 kilowatts of power. While manufacturing advances have enabled the creation of these sophisticated cells, qualifying them is still a challenge. See how programmable LED solar simulator (pLEDss) technology delivers the necessary performance to test and characterize these cells in our white paper: https://lnkd.in/evagQhrH #NASA #Artemis #spaceexploration #solarcells

The Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) is the power plant for Gateway, the moon-orbiting space station that will support the success of NASA’s Artemis program. To generate the 60 kilowatts of required power, the PPE is designed with sophisticated multi-junction solar cell technologies. However, multi-junction cell designs are complex and prohibit testing through conventional methods. Programmable LED solar simulator (pLEDss) technology delivers the necessary performance to qualify the sophisticated solar cells that enable Gateway’s success. The NASA Artemis program will launch and construct Gateway, humanity’s first moon-orbiting space station, which is powered by the 60-kilowatt Power and Propulsion Element (PPE). To generate this much power, PPE is designed with solar cell technology so advanced that it poses a challenge to the measurement of performance via conventional strategies. Check out our new white paper to learn how our programmable LED solar simulator (pLEDss) technology lets us test and characterize these PPE solar cells, supporting the future of space exploration. #NASA #Artemis #spaceexploration #solarcells
