Dear oncology collegues,
Please stop saying to your patients: "There is nothing else to do, but we can offer palliative care."
Palliative care is not a last resort; it's an essential component of integrated, people-centered health services. It's purpose is not to signify the end of treatment options but to enhance the quality of life for patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
We can assist at any time of the cancer care continum because we don't treat a disease, we treat people. Our best work -the one that brings relief, hope and meaning to life- is done with time. We can come at the end of life, to hold someone's hand and treat symptoms, but we can also treat pain, help with financial stress, assist with family dynamic and so much more during treatment.
We are here to offer relief, hope, and meaning at every stage, not just at the end of life.
If you are unsure of when you should refer, just ask and, believe me, we will be happy to answer.
Thank you,
