This is exactly what Terence was facing as he battles Stiff Person Syndrome - a rare, autoimmune neurological disorder. This week's Thankful Thursday newsletter features Kim from Haverhill, MA — a wife & mother who is battling an ultra-rare condition - Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMAS) also known as Wilkie's Syndrome. After years of failing health and no solutions from her local medical team, Kim was able to connect with a renowned surgeon who agreed to perform surgery that would hopeful help her with her healthcare struggles. Her husband reached out to Angel Flight NE in early February asking for help to transport Kim to Virginia on February 13th for surgery on February 14th. Our mission/flight coordinators jumped on the request and was able to ensure that Kim and David could travel safely, quickly and efficiently from Lawrence Municipal Airport to Blacksburg, VA and home. Today is Rare Disease Day, a global effort to bring awareness and equity in social opportunities, healthcare, and access to diagnoses and therapies for people living with rare diseases. On Rare Disease Day, we reflect on our vital mission's impact on individuals battling rare diseases. Since 1996, Angel Flight NE has provided essential medical transportation for patients facing rare and challenging conditions. ? Rare Disease Day, observed annually on the last day of February, is a time to raise awareness and show support for those living with rare diseases worldwide. At Angel Flight NE, this day holds special significance as we stand in solidarity with patients, families, and advocates. Over the past several months, we have experienced an increase in flight requests for patients- children and adults- diagnosed with several disease diseases. We have since formed partnerships with 90+ patient organizations that specialize in various rare diseases. Throughout our journey, we've flown patients with rare diseases to specialized medical care facilities across the United States, offering hope and a lifeline in their time of need.?These efforts?are?assisted through?the generosity of the Alexion Charitable Foundation, our 450+ volunteer pilots, and our commercial airline partners, including JetBlue and Cape Air.
