Construction crews marked a major milestone today for a $156 million consolidated car-rental facility nearing completion at Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) that will streamline the rental process and free up more parking for travelers. Airport officials and construction partners gathered Tuesday morning to hold a ceremonial beam-raising for the airport’s consolidated rent-a-car, or CONRAC, facility being constructed on the northeast side of the airport terminal building. CONRAC broke ground at the airport in May 2023 and is set to open in spring 2026. The facility will be the first of its kind in Michigan. Casey Ries, the airport’s chief asset development officer, said Tuesday it feels “surreal” to be just a year out from completion. “We identified the need for additional parking and documented it in 2019, so to go through the highs and lows of record-breaking traffic and the pandemic, and now to be recovering and re-establishing the project is very exciting,” Ries said.
