In 1870, Lewiston was booming. Textile mills thrived, the population surged, and industry reshaped the Androscoggin River area. But while businesses flourished, everyday workers—those who powered this growth—were often overlooked by the banks of the time. Twelve citizens saw this gap and took action. They came from all walks of life—factory owners, clerks, and city leaders—but shared one belief: banking should serve everyone. They petitioned for the creation of Androscoggin County Savings Bank, a place where hard-working individuals could save, build, and secure their futures. On March 5, 1870, that vision became reality. Led by Eliphalet F. Packard, a shoe factory owner turned first Bank president, they laid the foundation for an institution built on community, inclusion, and progress. And 154 years later, that mission lives on. From our founding to today, Androscoggin Bank has remained dedicated to the people, businesses, and communities we serve. This Founders’ Day, we celebrate those who dared to dream of something greater—and the generations who have carried that dream forward.
