On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honor the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. Between the 1800s and 1990s, more than 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced to attend residential schools where they faced abuse, neglect, and efforts to erase their languages, cultures, and identities. Thousands never returned home. This day reminds us of the painful history and ongoing impacts of these schools on Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
