????Something most people wouldn’t guess about me is that I’m secretly an introvert. Yep. I’m happiest at home, but I make it a point to get social. Why? Because I’ve been invited to do so, and I’ve learned to never take an invitation for granted. I don’t suggest we should attend EVERY event. We simply can’t. But, it IS important to - see how others live and work ?? - experience the feeling of actually shaking hands or hugging ?? - know what’s happening in the world around us by being IN it. ?? Working from home and “zooming” all day won’t give you that. And being social - for me, at least - is a muscle that must be flexed. ???? When you get the invite, go. Shake hands, smile and have a snack. It’s always worth it. I’ve met, worked with and befriended so many wonderful people because of it. ?? Use what you have for good - and never underestimate the power of a negative opinion. ?? My 4th grade teacher, Ms. Higgins, warned me I’d never be anything more than “mediocre” at math. Her stinging words ?? drove me straight to a dictionary, where I discovered a love of words…and THAT has made all the difference in my career and FOR my community. See - as I launched my career ?? many years later (a then broke but ambitious college grad) - I learned that even if I had no dollars to give, I could always lend my voice to community causes I found important. In doing so, I could increase my visibility in my network and elevate my lens on the world. So began my volunteerism as an event emcee. With a microphone ??, I could GET the dollars I didn’t have from the generous people who did. In my book, that was compounding resources - where one person with a voice and another with financial means could make thousands of good things happen. 20+ years later, I have emceed well over 100 events, and I am still honored to do so. This week, I emceed East House’s luncheon with my sister Norma Holland. The incredibly talented, resilient and enormously kind ??Chaz Bono ?? (yes, Cher’s son) was the speaker. It was a world of good coming together to support over 1250 people in recovery in our community. ?? Ms. Higgins may have been right about my mediocrity at calculus, but her negative opinion couldn’t kill my drive to make more than 2 from 1+1. And THAT is the math I want to be doing.
