Could the EV transition be a double-edged sword? New research from Princeton University reveals that while electric vehicles (EVs) are crucial for a sustainable future, the transition could lead to unexpected air pollution hotspots in China and India. The study, led by Wei Peng, an assistant professor of?public and international affairs?and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, highlights the potential increase in sulfur dioxide emissions from refining critical minerals like nickel and cobalt, essential for EV batteries. A team of engineers from the USP - Universidade de S?o Paulo and Princeton Engineering has developed an approach for recycling cement waste into a sustainable, low-carbon alternative that is comparable in performance to the industry standard. The approach could enable new uses for construction and demolition waste, which is one of the largest streams of solid waste in the world. “Construction waste typically ends up either in a landfill, or, if it’s recycled, will be used in low-grade applications such as in pavements or in soils,” said research leader Sergio Angulo of the University of S?o Paulo. “It’s exciting to show that we can, in fact, recycle this recovered cement waste into a high-quality application.” At the same time, the engineered, recycled cement could help lower carbon emissions from the cement industry, which accounts for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. “The leap forward here is that you can now get short- and long-term properties that are essentially the same as Portland cement by itself with a low-carbon alternative overwhelmingly composed of recycled materials,” said co-author Claire White of Princeton Engineering and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment.
