We celebrate the declaration of the Arroyo Guarichona municipal protected area which spans 492,815 acres (199,435 ha) in the municipality of San Ramón in Bolivia’s Beni department! ????? The protected area will strengthen territorial management and water security, safeguarding biodiverse savannahs and forests which provide essential water services for local populations. The floodplains that span the territory of Arroyo Guarichona are the meeting point of four biogeographic regions: the Amazon, Cerrado, Chiquitania, and Chaco. The territory is home to the blue-throated macaw (Ara glaucogularis), a critically endangered species. ?? Arroyo Guarichona was declared to be a municipal protected area on July 5, 2024, becoming part of Bolivia’s national system of protected areas, and was created thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Municipal Autonomous Government of San Ramón, local communities, volunteers, and the technical support of Conservación Amazónica - ACEAA. ? In Brazil’s State of Pará, a new, very special, protected area has been established, guarding some of the most majestic trees in the Amazon rainforest. ?? ?? The Giant Trees of the Amazon State Park (Parque Estadual das árvores Gigantes da Amaz?nia) spans 1,384,000 acres (560,000 hectares) and aims to protect a rare type of tropical forest with extremely tall trees (many over seventy meters tall) located in the area, one of which, an exemplar of Angelim Vermelho (Dinizia excelsa), is considered the tallest tree in the tropical Americas at a height of 290 feet (88.5 meters). These trees are unique; their carbon stock is equivalent to 500 average sized trees and their age may be somewhere between 400 to 600 years old according to researchers. ?? ?? The new State Park contributes towards the improved protection of contiguous areas of high biological importance, strengthening the network of protected areas in the region. ? The Giant Trees of the Amazon State park was established through the leadership and participation of the State Government of Pará, the Institute for Forestry and Biodiversity Development in the State of Pará (IDEFLOR-Bio), the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Amapá (IFAP), and Foundation for Amazon Sustainability (FAS), with financial support from the Andes Amazon Fund.?? ? ??? Record-breaking fires are trampling through sensitive ecosystems across South America, threatening endangered biodiversity and creating dangerous levels of air pollution in cities like Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Pucallpa, Peru, Quito, Ecuador and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. ?? Wildlife in the burned areas face the flames or become displaced, hindering their chances of survival. ??? Fueled by a combination of high temperature and drought caused by the El Ni?o climate event that ended earlier this year and long term trends caused by climate change and deforestation, the fires have spread across millions of hectares and several Amazonian countries, threatening lives and property. ?? The creation of protected areas and indigenous reserves significantly reduces both deforestation and fire occurrence. We must work together to protect these areas. ?? For those wanting to help the fire emergency across the region we share the name of a few of the organizations working diligently on local efforts to contain the reckless flames: Perú por Naturaleza, Perú Fundación Socioambiental Semilla, Bolivia Fondo ?eque, Ecuador Fundo Casa Socioambiental, Brazil ?? ??We celebrate the creation of the Pueblo Kichwa de Rukullakta (PKR) Provincial #Conservation and #Sustainable Use Area, which encompasses 103,509 acres (41,889 ha) in the Ecuadorian province of Napo. The new conservation area is located at a unique point in Ecuador’s central Amazon, where the Andes cascade towards #lowland #rainforest, and the mighty #NapoRiver flows from soaring volcanoes and into the Amazon River. ?? ?? The creation of the protected area was established through the leadership and participation of the Napo Provincial Government, alongside 17 local communities, primarily Indigenous Kichwa peoples, and with technical support from Ecopar. ??
