As I continue to immerse my self in the research associated with evidence-based interviewing practices and engage with very talented minds in the field, my beliefs are put to the test. As a result, there are so many topics we need to talk about and this is one. What's the deal with lying and making up evidence in the interview room? Good idea? Why do we do it? We must be introspective enough to know who we are and why we do the things we do. I had the privilege of writing a Reflections from the Field article on Collaboration for the Project Aletheia website this week. In the interviewing and investigation realm we aren’t encouraged, nor do we collaborate effectively with colleagues, organizations, nor those in other fields. We should because the results will most certainly be better. This article specifically addresses our need to get out of our interviewing silo to move away from legacy practices and adopt evidence-based interviewing. So what's a gameful mindset? I had a great discussion a couple of weeks back while recording a podcast with Alistair McBride, a negotiation and communication coach. Drilling into the parallels in our respective fields was awesome, and Alistair put this subject of a gameful mindset on the table. My response was how applicable this is to investigative interviewing. Not that what we do is a game, but the strategic implications of our approach require this mindset. #investigations #interviewing #auditing #rapport #gamefulmindset #creativity #empathy

A new week, a new call to action. Are you aware of and practicing trauma informed interviewing? When we consider evidence-based interviewing, this is another area we must consider. If our goal is to maximize the quantity and quality of truthful information, we must be cognizant of the psychological state of the person we are talking to. Are we prepared to address our interviewee right where they are? Or do we have our standard approach, haven't prepared, and we are going where we want? Part of seeking to understand is to accurately assess where the person we are talking to is at. This ACE Model is a helpful framework for accomplishing that. Any model I use is easy so that I can apply is across the board. Do you know what WISCI is? I think you should if you have ever had a critical incident or investigation with multiple subjects. It is important so here's a primer as blog #2 for this week. A couple of weeks ago, I was unfamiliar with the topic, but getting out of my silo (talked about this earlier this week), I was listening to the Truth Be Told Podcast with David Thompson, CFI, who had on James Harris, an lecturer and interviewing researcher from Great Britain. In amongst a ton of good information they spoke about this topic of WISCI at related to evidence-based interviewing. I did some research on found the source documents and the work done by Rebecca (Becky) Milne, Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, University of Portsmouth, and Kevin Smith of the National Crime Agency, London, England and have attached their work in this blog. Getting out of my silo, and engaging, led me to some outstanding individuals producing some fantastic material. A lot of times the way we have always done it, is not the best way. Because we always wore suits to interviews in the past doesn't mean it is the best way. If it is based on legacy and not strategy, it likely is not the best. Each incident, each interview, each decision is unique. #interviewing #evidencebased #investigations

We're talking creativity here! I had a great opportunity to get out of my silo (we all need to do this) and have an invigorating discussion with Kelly Paxton - Pink Collar Crime Expert and Colton Seale last Friday. We were recording an episode for Kelly's Fraudish podcast and we talked about Creativity. I couldn't get it off my mind. It wasn't a topic I had thought much on before, but I should have. So I set about to research it more and look more intently for it's applicability in evidence-based interviewing. Getting out of that silo means talking with others and paying attention to what research is saying too. So thank you to Christian A. Meissner, Maria Hartwig and others for contributing without knowing it.
