In some recent research from Female Lead/Peanut, when returning mothers were asked what they wished for. After flexible working, the second most wished for thing was to be asked what support they needed. 52% wanted this, and yet only 21% were asked. It breaks my heart when I read stats like this, listening is such an easy thing to do and yet so few of us do it - we're too busy thinking about the answer, distracted, too busy to be present to what others are saying. If you work with working mums or know of any, I really encourage you to make some proper time to ask how they are. Just to listen, without any agenda or as a tick box exercise. And if they say fine, acknowledge that and also ask them what could be better? Because I guarantee there will be something they want to share. Even if you can't do anything about it in the moment, it will make a huge difference for working mums just to be seen and heard ?? I often wonder what assumptions line managers and employers have about working mums when they decide to overlook them for training/promotions/new projects etc etc… My own assumptions (or absolute beliefs!) of working mums are that they are: ??Productive: they have to be, kids take up so much time outside of our working hours that we have no choice but to be super productive with the time that we have ??Ambitious: work is an expression of who they are, outside of being mum. It's so important to honour this, and allow ourselves to discover what we love and enjoy ??Committed: they work hard because they need money to pay for astronomical nursery fees ??Empathetic: this muscle gets exercised day in and day out with kids, and it goes such a long way to support their team and a nurturing culture There are obviously so many more to add here (please do feel free to add more in the comments!)...but there's so much that working mothers bring to companies. So, if you work with any working mums please question your assumptions - and if you were to see them in the way that I do, how would your interaction and considerations for them change? Last week Takako Elliott and I did a thing! You may have seen my posts banging on about it! You may not have. But And Beyond From Bump to Boardroom happened. And we were so pleased with how it went. Getting emails and messages such as "just did my first maternity webinar and it was soooo helpful", and "we've just had such great feedback from the people we sent to your event today!" really reminded us WHY we run this consultancy. Companies that see the benefit in supporting parents are officially THE BEST. Some reflections from running our event last week...: ? SO much gratitude for the kindness and willingness of so many people to support us. Any act, big or small, means an incredible amount when you're trying to bring a project to life, which is so close to your heart. If someone you know is planning something or needs support, please do what you can - it will mean more to them than you'll probably ever know. ? Importance of your network and community. Ultimately, your business is only as strong as the network that you have. Nurturing these networks and deepening trust and connection is the key to everything. ? If you can dream it, you can make it happen. This event was just a tiny idea 6 months ago, and it felt a bit too big for us to embark on. And yet we made it happen, still can't quite believe we did it! ? It takes a lot more time, energy and effort to plan and run an event than I ever expected. It's been such a great learning curve for us, and it's definitely worth stretching yourself to discover where the gaps are. ? Made us realise how much more there is to do. Even though we thought the ticket prices were really reasonable, it was apparent that even this was too much - or there just wasn't the consideration that this would be of benefit to so many. There is so much more that I could share, but these are probably the top ones. A massive thank you to every single person that came along and made it the success it was, feedback is still coming in but everyone has been really positive about it so far - which has been a real joy to hear. And of course a huge thank you to all our inspirational speakers, thank you for your wisdom and enthusiasm - we couldn’t have done it without you.
