Last Thursday at the 81st National Congress of American Indian (NCAI) Annual Convention, Alaska Native leaders took to the main stage to discuss Alaska’s unique model of self-determination. We were honored to have Melanie Bahnke, President & CEO of KAWERAK INC, Nathan McCowan, President & CEO of St. George Tanaq Corporation, President Richard Peterson of Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, and Shauna Hegna, President of Koniag and Chief Brian Ridley of Tanana Chiefs Conference. ? This powerful discussion was one of the first of its kind at NCAI, demonstrating the unique system that Alaska Native people have been working within since the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) in 1971. With more than 275 attendees from Alaska and Lower 48 Tribes, ARA and our partners are honored to present at this year’s convention. Quyana (thank you) to National Congress of American Indians. #NCAI2024 #TribalLeadership #NCAI #AlaskaNative?

ARA members and partners highlighted two collaborative projects that embody Alaska’s unique constellation of self-determination at yesterday’s #RES2024 panel discussion moderated by Tangirnaq Native Village (Woody Island Tribal Council) Tribal Council Member Germaine Salmine. Chugach Alaska Corporation President Josie Hickel, The Eyak Corporation President/CEO Thomas Mack, and Native Village of Eyak Special Projects Manager Bert Adams spoke about their coordinated efforts to build an oil spill response and marine casualty response facility in Prince William Sound, a region that still feels the impacts of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Calista Corporation President Andrew Guy and Lummi Indian Business Council interim General Manager/Director of Economic Policy Sean Lawrence discussed their new partnership to work together toward opportunities for their Tribal Citizens and Shareholders. And in an exciting development for the project, Calista Corporation and Lummi Nation also signed the formal MoU during RES. Quyanaa to our panelists and moderator for sharing these innovative partnerships at RES!
