AWWU employs close to 300 men and women who operate its treatment plants and other facilities, while spending $50 million annually to ensure Anchorage’s water and wastewater systems perform efficiently. The Utility’s Core Purpose – Safeguarding Public Health and the Environment - is supported and attained with AWWU’s Infrastructure, its Financial Resources, and most importantly, its Human Resources, our professional staff. AWWU employees are provided with the tools to achieve success through education, training, certification programs, and field experiences which have resulted in a staff with longevity at all levels for the residents of the Municipality of Anchorage to depend upon. These are treatment plant operators, engineers, administrators, laboratory technicians, maintenance craftsmen, accountants, customer service representatives, computer specialists and field service personnel. AWWU meets the requirements of an updated U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulation that’s focused on eliminating the risk of lead in drinking water. Our drinking water is high-quality, reliable, and does not contain lead when it leaves the treatment facility. The risk of lead in the drinking water system comes from pipes and plumbing components made of lead. AWWU has no documented lead pipes within our system, and lead water pipe production ended in the 1940s. Lead pipes, solder, and fittings were banned in the United States several decades ago. AWWU regularly tests drinking water at end-user taps to ensure it is safe and does not exceed maximum contaminant limits for lead. However, the pipe that brings water into your home is your private property. In compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule requirements, AWWU will be asking for your help to confirm those pipes are not lead. AWWU will have a website available with more information, including known and unknown inventory maps and procedures for testing or piping to identify the type of material it is made of.
