You’ve probably heard of the sandwich generation. The group of adults who are sandwiched between two generations and two sets of responsibilities. i.e. managing the care of their families while caring for aging parents. Even those who don’t have families of their own can experience the stress of caring for an elderly parent. There are ways to practice self-care and keep your stress level down though. Here are three to get you started: 1??. Accept Help You can’t do it all on your own. So, when friends offer to arrange transportation, run errands, or help shoulder some of the load, take them up on it. 2??. Prioritize “Me Time” It’s not selfish to carve out some time for yourself. So, be sure to set time aside for rest and rejuvenation. You’ll come back refreshed and energized. 3??. Set Boundaries Sometimes we’re afraid to say “No.” However, a lack of limits and boundaries leaves us feeling depleted emotionally and physically. Set boundaries so that everyone knows what you are and are not capable of doing. These gaps can be filled by others better equipped to handle these tasks. ?? Do you have some tips for practicing self-care and managing stress as a caregiver? If so, please share!

?? There’s nothing like a relaxing hot bath. However, retaining that heat can be challenging. This is a bigger issue for the elderly because they’re more sensitive to cold. Reasons for this include thinning of the fat layer under the skin, medications that reduce circulation, or health issues like hypertension or diabetes. If you’re a caregiver who assists an elderly person with bathing, here are some tips to help keep them warm and comfortable. ?? Before bath time, run hot water in the bathtub or shower for a few minutes to warm up the bathroom. ?? Make sure the person is hydrated and well-fed with a nutritious meal. This will aid in circulation and thermoregulation. ?? During the bath, periodically check to make sure the water is still warm ?? Avoid opening and closing the door to prevent drafts ?? After the bath, get the hands and feet dry and covered as soon as possible. ?? Lastly, be attentive and acknowledge any concerns the person in your care has. We hope you’ll follow these tips to make bath time a stress-free and comfortable experience for your loved one.

?? People have questions about hospice & palliative care and we love that. We want to be a source of knowledge and information so you can make the best decisions about the right care for yourself or loved ones. After all, knowledge is power. Here are some common questions and answers: 1?? What’s the difference between palliative care and hospice care? Palliative care aims to provide relief from pain and other symptoms associated with chronic conditions. Hospice care is personalized care that focuses on symptom management and the quality of life of adults and children who are facing life-limiting illnesses. 2?? Is hospice a physical place? No, not really. Hospice care is provided wherever a patient calls home. Think of hospice as a type of care vs. where the care takes place. 3?? Is hospice care only for adults? No. Pediatric hospice care addresses the unique needs of infants, children, and adolescents facing life limited illnesses.. To learn more about the type of care palliative and hospice care Anchor Health provides, please visit our website. https://www.anchorhpc.com/

??“There are only four kinds of people in the world: Those who have been caregivers. Those who are currently caregivers. Those who will be caregivers, and those who will need a caregiver.” – Rosalyn Carter Do these words resonate with you? They do with Anchor Health. Especially when you consider that 65.7 million Americans provide unpaid care to a relative with an illness or disability. That’s nearly 30 percent of the population. Sometimes the needs of caregivers fly under the radar. People are typically concerned about the care of the recipient while the wellbeing of the caregiver is taken for granted or not addressed at all. That’s why it’s important to observe National Family Caregivers Month. For November, take some time to acknowledge, honor, and support family caregivers as they provide compassionate care for their loved ones. You can do this by raising awareness about caregiving issues and sharing caregiver resources. For more information about National Family Caregivers Month and access to social media shareables, visit National Council on Aging.
