?Privacy Protocols like Railgun: Innovation or Investigation Nightmare? In January 2023, the FBI revealed that the North Korean Lazarus Group used Railgun—a privacy-focused DeFi protocol— to launder $60M (41,000 ETH) stolen in the Harmony Horizon Bridge heist. Those funds are now worth $125M. Since its launch, Railgun has processed $2B+ in crypto transactions, with 76% of its volume in Wrapped Ethereum. Its adoption signals a growing demand for blockchain privacy—but also creating massive challenges for investigators. ?So, what’s Railgun (really)? Railgun is a smart contract-based privacy protocol designed to anonymize on-chain transactions using zero-knowledge proofs, specifically zk-SNARKs. Its mission? Make DeFi transactions private. In reality? A double-edged sword for privacy-conscious users and investigators alike. Railgun’s zk-SNARK technology shields user data on-chain, enabling fully private transactions. While this is great for users, bad actors are leveraging it too. ?Case in point: The Harmony heist. Over 31 smart contract events, like shielding/unshielding of funds, obfuscated the flow of funds, complicating investigations.? So…how can you trace funds through advanced privacy protocols like Railgun??? At AnChain.AI, we go beyond traditional approaches with advanced tools like SCREEN to deconstruct smart contracts and analyze all the hidden internal transactions. But even without our tools, here are 5 heuristics investigators can use when it comes to tracing funds through Railgun: 1?? Entry & Exit Points: Track where funds go in and out. Shielding and unshielding events can leave breadcrumbs. Track public addresses depositing funds into Railgun and monitor withdrawal transactions to see where funds reappear on public addresses. 2?? Timing Patterns: Analyze the timing of deposits and withdrawals. Look for correlated timing between large or unique deposit and withdrawal events that may suggest links. 3?? Off-Chain Activity: Context is key! Link on-chain Railgun activity with off-chain events. Compare Railgun transactions with external factors, such as exchange activities or known blockchain social interactions. 4?? Clustering Behavior: Identify related addresses through transaction patterns. Use clustering algorithms to find behavioral similarities in addresses interacting with Railgun, potentially identifying entities or groups. 5?? Governance Monitoring: Analyze known governance or public addresses that may have ties to Railgun and observe their transaction behaviors.
