Now this is a Corps memory! ??? Last month on Wednesday October 15, 2024, Secretary Haaland traveled to Canyons of the Ancients National Monument (CANM) in Colorado to visit the ancestral Puebloan site. This is the home of many tribes around the southwest and houses a convergence of cultures, which at the peak living capacity included an impressive 40-room village. This hitch, a crew from the Pueblo of Zuni had the honor of working on these dwellings where their ancestors once occupied and rekindling that spiritual connection. Pictured from Crew 661 are: Loren Quam, Seth Quam, Keanna Waatsa, Brooke Seowtewa, and Nathan Dewa. This crew was tasked with Historic Preservation work in the form of tediously maintaining the dwelling structures using a specialized motor mix to repair the gaps and joints in the walls. Making special appearances from the Individual Placements team were IP Program Managers: Shonto & Kiana. IPs in attendance were Tiana Cachini (also from Zuni) who is working on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) CANM Native Lands Mapping project, Pualani Tupper - BLM Colorado Office of Communications, and Darian Seowtewa, A former crew member who is now currently working as a Traditional Trades and Apprenticeship IP at Mesa Verde National Park. This visit will be a cornerstone in the program for years to come. Having support for the Indian Youth Service Corps from The Secretary of the Interior is equally validating as it is humbling. The American Climate Corps continues to show commitment by speaking with our program at a localized level and looking ahead for the next generation of conservation stewards ?? Thank you!!
