Will Tariffs Cause Shortages? The "short" answer: NO. Basic economic models can help us Understand how increased tariffs Potentially impact the economy. Let us take an example of a market of a product That uses imported components in its production. At equilibrium, the market quantity of this good is QM. PM is called the clearing price for the good in this market. Shortages occur when: - Price P is below the market price PM. - Quantity demanded increases at lower price. - Suppliers do not want to sell at the lower price. - SCARCITY is different: unavailability at any price. - Tariffs don't directly create shortages in the market. - Retaliations from foreign suppliers can cause disruption. - Example: https://lnkd.in/gy866ZRX Tariffs cause surpluses as: - Price is higher than market at PM + Tariff. - Quantity demanded decreases at higher price. - Suppliers are not able to sell sufficient quantities. - Foreign suppliers forced to reduce prices or exit market. - Domestic suppliers may sell between PM & (PM+Tariff) price. - Prices increase for consumers at first but will eventually decrease. Actionable Insights: 1. Check your supply-chain and identify alternatives. 2. Don't rush to be the "first mover" in increasing prices. 3. Rely on your procurement team for cost-effective options. 4. I know many SMBs and solopreneurs, That think that if they price below market, They will be able to get more clients and grow. I also know many SMBs and solopreneurs, Who simply use market price of similar goods, And assume that since they show profit, all is well. But let us step outside of these mindsets, and Consider the market dynamics more intentionally. In the Post-it today, I have shown two options That diverge from just using the fixed market price. I will post separately about why staying at market price, While profitable, might not necessarily be optimal for you. Option 1: Lower Your Price Below Market - Based on your lowest acceptable price and costs. - Would need to shift supply curve to the right. - Scaling up rapidly if demand exists at price. - Frustrations if there is no demand at PY. - You are catering to the entire market. - Burnout & overwhelm are common. Option 2: Increase Your Price and Niche Up - Based on your production capacity instead of price. - Caters to a niche market of high-paying clients. - Focus on branding and strategic marketing. - Helps build a sustainable growth model. - You are now catering to niche clients. - Your future potential improves.
