The ANA Educational Foundation (AEF) is the bridge connecting the marketing, advertising and academic communities. Our Campus Speakers Program brings advertising professionals to colleges and universities nationwide to conduct one-day programs with students and faculty. Speakers are carefully chosen, and programs customized to meet your class objectives. The Visiting Professor Program is a two-week fellowship for professors of advertising, marketing, communications and the liberal arts. In 2018, over 30 professors were hosted by advertising agencies in NYC and Chicago. What would you say to a room full of aspiring marketing students? I just finished a lecture to University of Tampa marketing students… We talked about trust, positioning and how to launch effective campaigns. There was positive energy in the room, but also concerns. They’re concerned about how marketers are perceived, their ability to find a job, and if they do, will they work for a company that supports them? I had to tell them the truth. Companies want marketers that get it… —> They get business. —> They understand strategy. —> They know the customer. —> They’re in tune with changes in the market. Connecting with consumers in our campaigns requires we have listened and understood them, our brands are trustworthy and authentic, and we are competent in a way that brings value to them. I didn’t get into marketing through the front door, I had to fight for my career. I hope these lessons over 20 years were of help to them. Many thanks to professor Lina M. Gomez-Vasquez for inviting me and the ANA Educational Foundation for setting it up.

This week I had the honor of speaking to Professor Sukki Yoon's Market Research and Marketing courses at Bryant University. His students displayed a passion for learning what Marketers due in the real-world, despite someone of them having to start their day with a lecture from me at 8am on a Monday! I was deeply impressed with their questions, follow-through, and ability to see how being a good Marketer was a skill that can drives success no matter what your discipline.
