A recent case report in Military Medicine sheds light on a rare but serious complication of gunshot wounds: bullet embolization. In this report, a young military personnel suffered chronic leg ischemia due to a bullet obstructing the popliteal artery. Despite the high energy transfer of military injuries, bullet embolization often goes undetected, leading to ongoing pain and complications. Early detection and prompt vascular surgery are crucial for preventing further damage. This case report serves as a reminder that not all gunshot injuries are as straightforward as they seem, and the risks go far beyond the obvious. On Tuesday, I was privileged to speak at AMSUS’ Oncology Thought Leadership Forum. It was inspiring to hear about the ongoing progress we continue to make.?It was also an important reminder that we are far from where we all want to be in terms of access, affordability, outcomes, and equity.?Rethinking how to bolster clinical trial enrollment, particularly with a health equity lens, redesigning care models, especially given the coming nursing and physician shortages, enhancing care coordination given the complexity of the patient care journey, finding ways to enhance data sharing/interoperability, and enabling the continued shift to high-quality care that links value with payments will be critical to continue to move the needle Thank you to the AMSUS - The Society of Federal Health Professionals team for hosting such an impactful event.
