One of the most effective methods was copper sheathing, which was toxic to marine organisms like barnacles and shipworms. The British Royal Navy pioneered this technique in the 18th century, but it caused corrosion issues with iron fastenings, leading to the use of compatible materials. Today, advanced antifouling coatings are used to keep barnacles at bay. ?????????????????? ???? ?????? ?????? ???????????? ???? ?????????????? ???? ?????????? ?? The Statue of Liberty wasn't always green; it started as a shiny copper color! Over time, exposure to air and moisture formed a protective patina, which prevents further corrosion. This patina is beneficial, as removing it could lead to deterioration. ???????? ???????????????? ???? ?????????? ?????????????????????? ?? NASA uses gold coatings on spacecraft to regulate temperature, protect against radiation, and enhance electrical conductivity. Gold’s high reflectivity prevents overheating while also retaining warmth in cold space environments. #FridayFact: Aging Bridges & Corrosion ?? The U.S. has over 607,000 bridges, and nearly 200,000 of them are classified as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Many of these bridges have exceeded their 50-year design life, requiring extensive maintenance to remain in service. With continued aging and delayed maintenance, corrosion remains a leading cause of bridge deterioration. While many efforts like this start with a lofty goal, it is not often that all content remains in scope.
