#FridayFact: Aging Bridges & Corrosion ?? The U.S. has over 607,000 bridges, and nearly 200,000 of them are classified as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. Many of these bridges have exceeded their 50-year design life, requiring extensive maintenance to remain in service. With continued aging and delayed maintenance, corrosion remains a leading cause of bridge deterioration. Without intervention, repair costs will continue to rise, putting infrastructure at greater risk. #CorrosionInEverydayLife #InfrastructureProtection #BridgeSafety #AMPP

AMPP: Association for Materials Protection and Performance Launches Unified Content Store! ?? AMPP has partnered with Silverchair to launch a new digital library, bringing together over 900 standards, 22,000+ conference papers, technical journals, industry magazines, books, and more—all in one searchable platform! “At the onset, our member leadership asked for a unified, searchable body of knowledge,” said Mandy May, Director, Content Management at AMPP. “Our content types are varied—from standards to magazine articles to even some physical products. While many efforts like this start with a lofty goal, it is not often that all content remains in scope. Silverchair worked tirelessly to host/make discoverable all content from the original scope incorporating an exhaustive AMPP-specific taxonomy—all while we simultaneously implemented a new association management system. Thank you, Silverchair team, for being the ultimate partners.” ?? Read the full press release: https://ow.ly/fT0950Vi6FX #AMPP #MaterialsProtection #Corrosion #Coatings #DigitalLibrary #Silverchair

Vice President of Defense and Civic Infrastructure at AMPP: Association for Materials Protection and Performance (formally SSPC/NACE)
Just wrapped up a great series of meetings in Washington, D.C., including discussions with Dale "Kid" L. from the American Society of Naval Engineers, Matthew Zirkle with the Maritime Industrial Base Program, and leaders from Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. Also had the opportunity to meet with Senator Kelly's legislative staff to discuss our support for the SHIPS for America Act, an effort to revitalize the domestic shipbuilding industry. Our focus: workforce development in the maritime industry—ensuring we have the right training, certifications, and career pathways to support the next generation of professionals in naval engineering, corrosion control, and ship maintenance. ? Collaboration between industry, government, and technical societies is critical to building a skilled workforce that can meet the evolving challenges of maritime operations. We covered a lot of ground—now if only navigating DC traffic was as smooth as our conversations :) ? Looking forward to continuing these discussions and working toward solutions. If you’re involved in workforce development for the maritime sector, I’d love to hear your thoughts—let’s connect! Great job team this week in D.C.! ??? Corrosion Prevention in Corrugated Steel Roofing ?? Corrugated steel roofing can be a durable and cost-effective choice, but without proper protection, it’s vulnerable to corrosion from moisture, UV exposure, and environmental pollutants. ?? That’s where protective coatings come in! ? These coatings act as a barrier between the metal and corrosive elements, significantly extending the lifespan of the roofing. Common types include: ?? ?? Galvanized Coatings – Zinc coatings provide sacrificial protection, preventing rust from reaching the steel. ?? Polymer-Based Coatings – Help improve weather resistance and aesthetics while adding extra protection. ?? Epoxy & Polyurethane Coatings – Offer enhanced durability in harsh environments. Regular maintenance, inspections, and choosing the right coating system can make all the difference in keeping your metal roofing strong for years to come! ?? #ProtectiveCoatings #Steel #CorrosionPrevention #AMPP

AMPP: Association for Materials Protection and Performance CEO Alan Thomas, MBA is collaborating with key industry leaders in Washington, D.C. this week to tackle U.S. shipbuilding labor shortages by expanding training programs, strengthening workforce pipelines, and advancing regulatory advocacy to secure the future of American maritime infrastructure. #AMPP #ShipBuilding #Infrastructure #Maritime
Results-Oriented CEO & Official Member of the Forbes Nonprofit Council | Driving Global Innovation and Continued Advancement in Corrosion Control and Materials Protection
This week in Washington, D.C., I’ve been meeting with key industry leaders to tackle one of the biggest challenges facing U.S. shipbuilding: Labor shortages. The future of our industry depends on steel, shipyards and—most importantly—a capable workforce, yet demand for talent far outpaces supply and without bold action, we risk falling behind when strengthening our maritime assets has never been more critical. ? Yesterday, I sat down with Rear Admiral Matthew Zirkle of the Maritime Industrial Base Program (MIB) and leaders from the American Shipbuilding Suppliers Association (ASSA) to explore solutions for closing the workforce gap. With the U.S. manufacturing base shrinking by a third over the past three decades, revitalizing these capabilities isn’t just an economic priority—it’s a national security imperative. ? Over the next decade, we need 140,000 new workers for submarine production and another 110,000 for surface vessel construction and maintenance—but without a structured apprenticeship pipeline, many potential workers can’t afford the necessary training to enter the industry. The solution? AMPP: Association for Materials Protection and Performance. We are actively exploring partnerships with MIB and the Hampton Roads Workforce Council to fund and implement AMPP training programs, providing industry-recognized education at no cost while ensuring we develop the talent needed to meet the U.S. Navy’s ambitious goals. ? Beyond workforce development, this week’s discussions reinforced the urgency of uniting industry leaders to double down on American shipbuilding efforts. AMPP, MIB and ASSA are aligned in expanding training, driving innovation and advancing regulatory advocacy—all essential to building a resilient maritime workforce. ? Shipbuilding has long been a pillar of American industrial strength, but meeting today’s demands will require strategic investment, collaboration and long-term commitment. I look forward to continuing this work and driving real solutions for the future of our maritime infrastructure. ? #WorkforceDevelopment #Shipbuilding #MaritimeIndustry #Manufacturing #AMPP #IndustryCollaboration #FutureOfShipbuilding
