Fun fact: I used to work for Tristan Handy (Founder and CEO of dbt Labs). It was so fun to catch up with him on Barrchives about the state of analytics in the age of AI! We cover everything from: - How dbt Labs shifted from a consulting company to a venture-backed software company - dbt for AI (how analytics engineers are preparing data for AI workflows) - AI for dbt (how AI can become a “thought partner” as analysts interrogate the business with data) - The biggest thing happening in data: the emerging standard in open table formats - Challenges integrating structured and unstructured data This episode is packed with gems for anyone interested in the future of analytics. Full episode in the comments!

By every possible quantitative measure, the number of technical tools on the market has skyrocketed over the past 10 years. Technical founders today are looking at a situation where go-to-market is quite literally either as important or more important than product and engineering. A few stats: - There are ~35 public companies in the U.S. with technical buyers today, vs. ~5 a decade ago - The % of companies in a given YC batch that are technical has basically 3x-ed in the past decade (some scraping required here ??) - More than twice as many students will graduate with an undergrad CS degree this year vs. a decade ago - Pitchbook tracks >2,000 seed/series A deals for technical tools over the past 10 years Virtually every major existing category is flush with options. Think about?observability – you’ve got Datadog, New Relic, AppDynamics, Dynatrace, Chronosphere, and Honeycomb, not to mention options from the major cloud providers, open source like Prometheus, and about 100 startups. Need log search? Well for?that?you’ve got Elastic, Splunk, Sumo Logic, Solarwinds… the list goes on. The same is true for databases, etc. etc. This of course doesn’t mean that it’s not worth starting a developer tools company, or that you’re doomed to drown in a sea of lookalikes. Quite the contrary. Great, new, enduring developer tools are created every month – just think about how much software in your team’s budget comes from companies that were created <5 years ago. I’ve spent every year since college working with these kinds of companies, and things are even more exciting today than they used to be. But the way to get there isn't the same as it used to be. There sure are a lot of developer tools out there. So what are you doing to stand out? I wrote a longer form version of this post for Amplified. Check out the link in the comments

Imagine creating purely for yourself—no red carpets, no awards, just authentic creative expression. This week on Barrchives, we explore a fascinating trend observed by Cristóbal Valenzuela (CEO of Runway): individuals using AI tools to craft videos solely for personal fulfillment. Much like going to the gym—not to become an Olympian, but simply because it feels good and is good for you—Runway’s tools enable users to exercise their creative muscles, producing countless videos for the joy of creation itself. We also chat about running Runway's organization like a neural network – constantly gathering data, and modifying the weights. Runway looks for people who can modify their “weights” – adapting the way that they work with others as new data comes in. Cris also dove into the complexities of creating a “common language” between humans and models – prompts today are not enough for making films, games, or experiences with AI. Runway’s goal is to bridge this gap so humans and models find common ground to unleash creativity. So many great nuggets in here and wisdom from Cris. Full episode in the comments!

To be or not to be (open source)? It's one of the most consequential decisions that a technical founder makes... and yet it's not always a question that's carefully considered. What are good and bad reasons to open source your product? Andrew Manoske would know. He has spent most of his career building open source and open core products, most recently at HashiCorp, where he spent 7 years leading Vault Enterprise from creation to over $100M in ARR. Andy has seen just about every possible justification for products choosing to be open source or not, and in the latest post on Amplified, he breaks down good and bad reasons to be open source. From the moral imperative to Kerckhoff's Principle, there are plenty of good reasons to open source: just make sure you think it through. (link in comments)

AI startups – do you want some free money? Yes? If so, highly recommend reading SkyPilot's post about how to get $1M in cloud credits for AI startups, and use them well (which is half the battle)

Sellers at technical companies should pay very close attention to what Troy Doles has done at WarpStream. Instead of hiring a team of SDRs, he built a series of automated pipelines that scale and perform (mostly) better for a fraction of the cost. We did a deep dive into what he's built and how you can try it yourself, featuring tools like Apollo.io, Clay, RB2B, Koala, and more. Technical founders and sellers, this one is for you. Check out the post in the comments, because LinkedIn refuses to render the preview properly

This week on Barrchives, I chat with Guillermo Rauch (Founder and CEO of Vercel) about how Vercel is changing the way frontend developers work. We discuss the motivation and process behind building Vercel’s AI products (v0 and AI SDK), and how AI will enable a more personalized web and shift the future of frontend cloud. Some of my favorite moments: - Guillermo believes that the best products adapt to the real world as it is today. This philosophy shapes Vercel’s approach to frontend, while planning for the long view that AI agents will act on behalf of humans on the web. - Guillermo explains how AI helps Vercel’s team scale their expertise and taste (through evals and frontier data) to their end users. - Borrowing wisdom from Instagram, Guillermo talks about the fundamentals of building strong developer experiences with progressive experiences that keep developers in the zone.
