We have 2 more weeks until the inaugural Donor Relations unConference and as I was writing my welcome letter or "ode" to attendees in the program I shared this sentiment:
" While we understand the importance of being donor-centric, we also recognize the necessity of professional development that is attendee-centric so we can have the energy and support to develop healthy strategic engagement plans."
I've realized throughout my career (and therapy) that a lot of my "burnout" was contributed to my service-oriented personality type that leads me to self-sacrifice. When you are self-sacrificing as many of us in the nonprofit sector most likely are, you have to set boundaries and prioritize your values. So if we are to create this idea of health and safety in our sector, we have to consider ourselves as people who have to place boundaries at work, with leaders, team members, donors ?? and all the above. If we actively conform as staff and professionals to the idea of being fully donor-centric it does force us to self-sacrifice a piece of ourselves for the greater good of everyone else. Sometimes leaving an internal void or causing that good 'ol burnout.
By attending this conference where people can be uplifted and their values prioritized, I hope they walk away with a sense of renewal and the idea that their annual plans don't have to have everything for everyone, but maybe just enough to be HEALTHY for everyone. Whew...I can't wait to spend 2 days with a room full of passionate professionals ready to learn, discuss, and collaborate.
