A groundbreaking paper published today in Nature finds that climate change is emerging as a major driver of the decline of amphibians worldwide. In addition to climate change, habitat destruction, disease and overexploitation are pushing amphibians closer than ever to extinction. Between 2004 and 2022, experts assessed the status of over 8,000 amphibian species, finding that overall two out of every five amphibians face extinction. Salamanders are particularly vulnerable, with three out of five species at risk. Climate change emerged as a major threat, affecting 39% of the amphibian species that have been pushed closer to extinction since 2004. Amphibians struggle to escape the increasing effects of climate change, such as intense heat, wildfires, drought and hurricanes. ?Habitat destruction remains the most common threat, affecting 93% of threatened amphibians. This is a result of agriculture, infrastructure development and other industries. Disease caused by the chytrid fungus also contributes to amphibian declines, and is exacerbated by climate change. With this vital information, it is time to form a global action plan to #SaveAmphibians. Let's be stewards of our planet and invest in the future of amphibians, which ultimately means investing in the future of Earth itself! https://lnkd.in/gWvJhYnA

?? Amphibians are key indicators of our planet’s health, yet they are disappearing at an alarming rate. Over 2,400 of the 8,500+ known amphibian species face extinction due to climate change and human activities. As the most threatened class of vertebrates, their survival is crucial for maintaining healthy ecosystems. This #WorldWildlifeDay, we emphasize the power of innovative financing to scale conservation efforts. Investing in wildlife means safeguarding ecosystems, economies, and future generations. I’m not mad… ??h??t’s j??s?? ??y f??c??! But the real concern isn’t my expression-it’s the state of our ecosystems.
