During our 5 days in Dallas, we spoke with 1000s of college students about their shopping preferences and habits. A few key themes emerged:
💳 DEBIT IS THE DEFAULT. College students use debit cards as a means of monitoring how much they're spending and where. Credit card users were far and few between.
🙅♀️ BUT DEBIT CARDS AREN'T REWARDING. Most debit card programs are bare bones, leaving something to be desired for students.
💰 WHEN DECIDING TO BUY SOMETHING, VALUE >>> ALL ELSE. For most of the students we spoke with, value was a key consideration in their buying decisions. Many wanted to shop more often at aspirational brands, but found price to be a limiting factor.
🔁 LOYALTY PROGRAMS AREN'T TOP OF MIND. Students cited belonging to 4 loyalty programs max -- Starbucks, Sephora, CVS, airline. Signing up for additional one-off loyalty programs felt "burdensome" and "like more effort than it's worth."
