Already in 2025, we have seen multiple initiatives launched and resources released to contribute to seafarer training ahead of the first ammonia-fueled vessels. Here, we explore the IMO’s first training guidelines, a new bunker training facility in India, and a safe procedures manual for ammonia bunkering developed by AEA member Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. ?? Together on the Road to 2030: Scaling Ammonia Storage ???? Last week at StocExpo 2025, AEA Stakeholder Relations Manager Andrea Guati Rojo, moderated the opening panel on the future of ammonia storage and transportation. The panel featured leaders from across the ammonia value chain, including representatives from the Port of Rotterdam, Vopak, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, ABN AMRO Bank N.V., the Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management, and VOTOB, Vereniging van Nederlandse Tankopslagbedrijven. The discussion focused on the biggest challenges and opportunities in scaling up ammonia storage infrastructure by 2030, and what key actions or policy measures are required in the next two years to accelerate investment and implementation. ?? Additionally, Andrea presented AEA’s certification efforts in developing a global Ammonia Certification System to support the development of a market for low- and zero-carbon ammonia. She also emphasized the importance of community engagement and public trust in facilitating ammonia adoption at scale. #StocExpo2025 #AmmoniaEnergy #AEA #AmmoniaStorage #Safety #Regulations #Innovation #EnergyTransition

??? ??? Low-Emission Ammonia Capacity by 2030: A Mixture of Technology Pathways The Ammonia Energy Association (AEA) just released the quarterly update of our project tracking, which now counts a total of 451.2 million tons (MT) of Low-emission and Transitional Ammonia capacity, across 485 projects (with 596 phases of expansion). Looking only at Operational, Firm, and Mature projects, 43.5 MT of Low-emission and Transitional ammonia capacity is expected to be Operational in 2030. ?? 3.7 million tons is already Operational (up to Q1 2025); 13.5 MT is Firm (e.g., under construction / FID); 26.3 MT is Mature (e.g., offtake / EPC selected / FEED). Most capacity is Newbuild at 33.4 MT, with revamps representing 10.1 MT. ?? Most capacity is low-emission, with 0.2 MT already operational, expected to increase to 37.7 MT in 2030. Transitional capacity accounts for 3.6 MT already operational, expected to increase to 5.9 MT by 2030. Low-emission capacity serves both existing markets and new ammonia energy markets, while transitional capacity mainly serves existing markets. ?? About half of the low-emission capacity this decade comes from Gas reformation projects, totaling 23.0 MT in 2030. Water electrolysis projects begin operating at scale in 2025-2026 and reach 17.5 MT capacity in 2030. ?? Gas reformation projects are typically located in regions with abundant natural gas, such as the US Gulf Coast, the Middle East, and Indonesia. Newbuild Water electrolysis projects have various narratives: (1) Optimal regions for solar and wind such as Australia, Chile, Eastern Canada, Egypt, India, Morocco, Namibia, etc.; (2) A highly renewable grid with substantial hydropower in Brazil and Norway, and in parts of India; (3) Replacing of coal-based production in China. AEA Member thyssenkrupp Uhde will supply technology for decarbonising three existing ammonia & urea plants operated by Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO) on the Nile Delta. This includes electrolysis capacity to feed the production of 150,000 tons per year of renewable ammonia, with AEA member Yara Clean Ammonia already committed as offtaker. We are excited to announce that registration for the APAC 2025 Ammonia Energy Conference, scheduled for June 16-18 in Perth, Australia, is OPEN! Although industry headwinds are proving challenging this year, there remains a suite of “no regrets” applications for low-emission ammonia and encouraging progress towards their implementation in the APAC region. At this year’s event, we will explore this progress, and the pathway to commercial implementation across a range of sectors, including maritime fuel, power generation, and fertilizers. The conference is open to AEA member organizations, prospective members, invited speakers, and the wider APAC hydrogen and ammonia community. Get all the details and register today for early-bird prices until Sunday, May 18, 2025. https://lnkd.in/eMkEG3Cm #Ammonia #AmmoniaEnergy #APAC2025

Please join us on Tuesday, April 22 @ 4PM China Standard Time (3 AM Eastern Daylight Time) to discuss ammonia fuel for manufacturing ceramic tiles and its potential new applications. Professor Yi-Bing Cheng (Strategic Scientist, Foshan Xianhu Laboratory) and Ms. Chuyun Zhang (Assistant to the President, Monalisa Group) will join AEA Technology Manager Kevin Rouwenhorst in a conversation about their experience using ammonia fuel to manufacture ceramic tiles. In late 2023, Monalisa Group and Foshan Xianhu Laboratory announced a project where ammonia would be used for heat to manufacture ceramic tiles in Nanhai District of Foshan City, China.? In September of 2024, ammonia, as a complete replacement of gas fuel, was successfully introduced in the firing process during tile manufacturing. This was the first demonstration of ammonia for heat in the mass production of ceramics, and it adds to a growing list of related industrial demonstrations. Don’t miss AEA Executive Director Trevor Brown, CFA at #CERAWeek in Houston this week discussing all things ammonia.
If you’re heading to #CERAWeek, join me on Thursday at 10am in the #CWAgora for a short sharp panel chat: "Hydrogen on the Move: From pipelines to ammonia, scaling the energy carrier of tomorrow,” with Jeff Norman (Air Products) and Jason Lanclos (Louisiana Economic Development), and Brian Murphy (S&P Global). Among other things, I’ll be talking about the Ammonia Energy Association's upcoming pilot of our global ammonia certification system. If we should catch up in person, send me a message. See you there!

In early January, the ?????????? ??????????, a medium-sized gas carrier, was loaded with ammonia from AEA member CF Industries’ plant in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, and with LPG at the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas in separate onboard storage tanks. After sailing to Europe, the cargoes were discharged separately: the LPG was unloaded in the Mediterranean, and the ammonia at Tees Port in the UK for use at CF’s fertilizer plant in Billingham. In addition to this successful transport, Korea has plans for two dual-fuel medium gas carriers as well.
