No Place Like Home: Housing as an LGBTIQ Issue in Germany and the United States by Akim van der Voort and Tyler Renner Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) community exist in every culture and in every part of the world, and the fight for LGBTIQ equity and inclusion intersects with every social justice struggle. Housing is no exception; it is a multifaceted issue for LGBTIQ communities, intersecting with broader concerns about homelessness, housing discrimination, and the rising cost of living. Despite Germany’s?reputation?as one of the most progressive countries in terms of LGBTIQ rights, access to safe, stable, and affordable housing remains a significant challenge for many within these communities. The discrimination LGBTIQ people face in both public and private life often leads to housing precarity, compounding other forms of social exclusion. Similar issues exist in the United States, with a key difference being that the United States maintains a patchwork of legal protections when it comes to LGBTIQ rights due to the federal structure of the legal and political systems. The Transatlantic Economy After the U.S. Election: Personal Takeaway On November 13th, the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc., the American-German Institute, and the American Council on Germany hosted a half-day forum on the future of the transatlantic economy following the elections in the United States. I had the honor of attending an event featuring the German Ambassador to the United States, Andreas Michaelis, who shared his insights on the future of the transatlantic partnership under the new administration. The event brought together an impressive lineup of esteemed speakers and panelists, including: ? - Martin Daum, Member of the Management Board of Daimler Truck ? - Michael Heinz, Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE ? - Dr. John Lipsky, Former Managing Director of the IMF ? - Matthew Luzzetti, U.S. Chief Economist at Deutsche Bank ? - Stefan Simon, Chief Executive Officer Americas and Chief Legal Officer for Deutsche Bank ? - Dr. Guido Skudlarek, President North America of Evonik Corporation The discussions focused on critical topics such as mobility and sustainable transportation, innovation and technology, and the evolution of supply chains. It was an inspiring opportunity to learn from these distinguished leaders and gain new perspectives on strengthening the transatlantic relationship. Some notes on what stood out to me: Yes, President-elect Donald Trump will have an impact on our economy. And yes, he will likely act in what he believes are the best interests of his country. It is to be expected that his administration's fiscal policy will boost growth in the United States. However, a significant trade war, including the imposition of outrageous taxes on imported products, would not benefit the country. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that America will decouple from Europe and Germany. Neither side is interested in a trade war. For instance, Germany is the third-largest investor in the U.S., which should be viewed as an asset. That said, we must do our own homework to remain—or better yet, become—more competitive and less dependent. Investments are needed, especially in infrastructure, alongside a stable and united government to lead the way forward. I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of business perspectives at this event, but let me put it this way: the general outlook wasn’t as pessimistic as I had imagined. Disruptive times are certainly ahead, but I am confident we will adjust and make it through. Let’s stay positive, learn from the past, and take collective responsibility to drive progress toward a better future. I did have the opportunity to discuss the Transatlantic Economy after the U.S. elections at an event organized by the American Council on Germany , the American-German Institute and the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. The event was hosted by Deutsche Bank AG New York and our discourse was moderated by Heike Buchter, the New York Correspondent of DIE ZEIT. As chemistry is the mother of all industries, chemistry and chemicals will enable our customers’ green transformation. While the impact of tariffs would be limited for BASF due to a 80% share of our Own Manufacturing Production Footprint, we continue to believe in the benefits of Free Trade and clearly see negative effects on the American economy and Global GDP, if taxes on trade will be implemented as suggested. It is important for all companies to get clarity on tariffs as well as any potential IRA repeal risk as fast as possible. We have high hopes in the new administration when it comes to Corporate Taxes, Permitting Reform and accelerating the approval of new and novel products through the Environmental Protection Agency. I was honored to attend the ceremonies on behalf of the University of Cologne.???? ??"For all who keep the world moving" was the motto of the 30th Global Leadership Award Dinner in #NYC. The Johns Hopkins University's AGI invited thought-leaders, researchers, and other stakeholders to honor Martin Daum, Member of the Board of Management at Daimler Truck AG. The award highlighted his contributions to Daimler's mission of enabling people to be mobile and explore new destinations around the globe.??? ??Many miles above the roads, Lufthansa shares that same vision. The company's CEO Carsten Spohr was the first honoree at ACG's 2024 John C. McCloy Awards Dinner. He oversees Lufthansa's operations and its more than 100,000 employees worldwide since 2014 and was recognized for facilitating international mobility and intercultural relations. Every flight between the #US and #Germany has the potential to further transatlantic friendships and collaboration, leading to more and closer connections.?? ???Evan Gershkovich, reporter for The Wall Street Journal, was the second honoree of last night. Having been detained in Russia in 2023 and set free earlier this year as part of a complex prisoner swap, the journalist was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine for his exceptional commitment to reporting on issues of global importance despite great risks. His story is a reminder of the fragility of international relations and the importance of protecting them.?? ???Ambassador Andreas Michaelis from the Embassy of Germany in Washington, D.C. was a guest of honor at both events, convening a message from Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He also highlighted the outstanding significance of the close and far-reaching German-American friendship and reminded us that "this moment is a call to action. Enough is Enough: Germany’s Coalition Breaks Up as It Prepares for a Second Trump Term The re-election of former president Donald Trump sent a shockwave around the world, not least through European capitals. Less than 24 hours later, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz fired Finance Minister Christian Lindner, in a move that reflects an ongoing battle within Scholz’s fractious coalition but that also connects to the challenges Germany will face in a second Trump term. One after another, the leaders of the coalition parties gave public statements on Wednesday night, beginning to prepare for early elections and positioning their justifications in the larger context of Europe’s response to a Trump administration. This being Germany, the dissolution of the Bundestag will be planned in advance, with Scholz calling a confidence vote on January 15 and the earliest possible election date being late March 2025. In that scenario, the earliest a government might take office would be May 2025 after coalition negotiations. Whether significant German moves will be possible in the meantime to prepare Germany for relations with a second Trump administration is an urgent question, one that Scholz hinted at in the context of Ukraine and Germany’s defense spending.
