On Tuesday, in collaboration with NC Sea Grant, we hosted a “Safe and Ready: Advancing Health and Disaster Preparedness for Coastal Latino Communities” conference at the Duplin County Agricultural Center. ??? ?? The purpose was to enhance public health outcomes for Latino coastal communities by building capacity in six coastal health departments to effectively communicate with low-English proficiency populations. In partnership with public health departments, the National Weather Service, and Latino NGOs, we aim to improve emergency alerts and disaster preparedness resources for non-English-speaking audiences. ?? Keynote speakers included Efosa Victor Iyore, MPH Social/Clinical Research Assistant from the Department of Health Education and Promotion, & Frank Lopez Extension Director of NC Sea Grant & Water Resources Research Institute. Our distinguished panel included Luz Sanabria-Reyes, MSW, MPA, Disaster Services Manager at the Office of Governor Roy Cooper; Matthew Barwich, Emergency Management Director and Fire Marshal of Duplin County; & Lindsey Woodard, Adult Health Services and PHP & R Coordinator at the Sampson County Health Department. ?? Thank you to all of our community partners that participated in this important conversation. Your participation is essential in shaping the future of health and disaster preparedness for coastal Latino communities. We look forward to working together towards building safer and more inclusive communities.
