These parameters are controlled to replicate actual end use conditions. Weathering chambers incorporate light sources ranging from carbon arc to xenon; metal halide to UV fluorescent lamps. Corrosion chambers simulating marine or corrosive environments are also available. Typical applications can be found in a variety of industries; automotive, paints and coatings, food and beverage, plastics and polymers, paper and packaging, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, textiles, and solar. Additionally, Atlas offers a global network of commercial accelerated and outdoor testing sites providing weathering test services for all industries. Driving Durability: Atlas and the Evolution of Automotive Parts Testing Did you know? For over 50 years, Atlas has been at the forefront of advancing durability testing standards in the automotive industry. We pioneered accelerated xenon-arc weathering technologies and created realistic test methods with leading automotive OEMs in the US and Germany (image shows VW’s central laboratory in the 1970ies using Atlas Xenotest 150). These tests replicated three critical benchmark climates: ?? Subtropical ?? Desert ?? Automotive Interior Thanks to these innovations, today’s cars are not only stylish but also built to endure some of the harshest conditions: the combination of intense solar UV radiation, elevated temperatures, plus the damaging effects of water. Our journey continued. The Atlas legacy has expanded, with collaborations with French, Italian and Asian manufacturers to extend the reach of xenon-arc solutions. In weathering testing, correlation usually measures how well an accelerated test predicts a material's property change in “real-world” environmental conditions over time. But correlation without relevance is meaningless: in addition to the macroscopic property change, the degradation mechanism on a molecular level needs to be the same in both tests.
