8 Years of hard work are now paying off! They say long-term investment and time truly create movement and change. My socks were blown off by the incredible receptiveness at the Port Everglades Association Luncheon this Friday. ?? Sitting alongside amazing friends, companies, and sponsors of yesterday’s luncheon—Advanced Mechanical Enterprises/AME , Maritime Professional Training and CBRE. With AME as a PEA member and Rich Merhige serving on the board, I’ve always understood just how impactful these monthly luncheons are. At Friday’s luncheon, we had the honor of shaking hands and hearing from U.S. Rep. Brian Mast a remarkable leader and dedicated American. Lori Baer runs a phenomenal luncheon that everyone in the room looks forward to. She always gives me the opportunity to share my passion for Junior Achievement of South Florida and I can’t tell you how exciting it is to look ahead to our next three-year commitment at JA Sea The World (school term 2025-2028)! I asked the room how many had heard of Junior Achievement—and I was SO happy to see 70% of hands go up! ?? While on the mic, I had two key asks: 1?? For businesses to offer their maritime facilities, port operations, construction sites, and utilities as exploratory field trip sites for the JA Pre-Apprenticeship Program, giving students the opportunity to see real-world work in action. Floored by the number of people who came up to me afterward, eager to get their businesses involved in JA—across industries like maritime, construction, and utilities. It was SUCH a proud moment. 2?? When waters meet shaking hulls, we step in. ?? During a recent vibration survey at Turnberry Marina, we examined a vessel after work was done at a local repair facility. Though calm seas and an organized engine room set the tone, our findings uncovered areas that warranted attention. Here’s what we discovered: Hull Structure: Exceptional vibration levels overall, but a peak at the 5th order (Blade Pass Frequency) suggested possible structural resonance. Port & Starboard Machinery: Vibration levels were largely acceptable, though elevated axial vibrations and engine mount deflections stood out. Shafts: Displacement levels were within tolerance, but there’s room for greater alignment precision. Our recommendations to boost performance: Inspect and balance the starboard propeller to ISO 484 Class “S” standards. Investigate the source of axial vibrations in the exhaust system mounts. Correct engine mount deflections and perform precise alignment of the cardan shafts. Conduct a follow-up vibration survey to measure improvements and establish a performance baseline. With these adjustments, this vessel is on course for a better and safer cruise. Fine-tuning makes all the difference out there. Taking chances, finding potential... ?? Last Monday, on Presidents’ Day, I participated in an Industry Breakfast hosted by Junior Achievement of South Florida. Sitting on the panel, I had the opportunity to share the story of our positive apprentice successes… Armani Hosang. Anytime you hire someone, there’s always some uncertainty until they’re in the job. With an apprentice you have the unique opportunity to start fresh and help shape their skills and work habits to align with your company’s needs. That’s why I’m so glad we took that chance with Armani.” Through Junior Achievement’s Pre-Apprenticeship Program, Armani joined us, and watching his growth showed me the value these programs bring. At the panel discussion we talked about the importance of mentorship, overcoming challenges, and how tailored onboarding can really set up young talent for success. Of course, we touched on SOFT SKILLS and JA has done a good job with teaching these young students how important soft skills are in the business world. The maritime pre-apprenticeship program has been set up to dovetail into the Marine Industries Association of South Florida Yacht Service Technician Apprentice Program. Junior Achievement also announced they were adding two new apprenticeship programs, four now to their curriculum...Water Operations Specialists & Telecommunications Tower Technicians. The 4th?pre-apprenticeship program that was created in tandem with the Yacht Service Technician, is the construction ABC Institute training. ? Our team at AME was called to perform a laser alignment on the Port Inboard reduction gear and main engine aboard an M/V after a gear replacement. Exact alignment is crucial to maintain operational efficiency and extend machinery life. ???What we found The new reduction gear was misaligned with its shaft line, and the main engine needed fine-tuning to optimize its connection to the replacement gear. Despite encountering bolt-bound conditions, we used precision laser alignment to restore balance. Final results confirmed all tolerances were well within specifications to ensure smooth operations. ???Recommendation We recommended implementing a vibration analysis as part of your routine maintenance program. Post-alignment vibration checks reveal critical insights into operational health and can prevent unexpected failures. For this vessel, we proposed a follow-up alignment inspection within 6-12 months and annual vibration surveys to maintain peak performance and avoid costly delays.
