Nearly 400 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are supporting Hurricane Helene and Milton recovery efforts across Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas. AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith shares about the importance of disaster recovery and its impact on communities: I'll never forget seeing AmeriCorps in action for the first time on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Long after the cameras had gone away in the year after Katrina, AmeriCorps members were still on the ground pulling the pieces back together, doing hard work to help communities grapple with the hurricane's devastation. Twenty years later, I continue to see our members' and volunteers' commitment to make a difference when Americans need it most. Currently, nearly 400 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are serving in communities affected by the two devastating hurricanes. I met AmeriCorps members serving with FEMA Corps, an innovative, team-based national service program that provides 18 to 26‐year‐olds the opportunity to gain experience and training in emergency response while supporting immediate needs after a disaster for survivors and their communities. Members of AmeriCorps NCCC in North Carolina supported the initial disaster response, creating incident action plans, assisting disaster survivor services, building capacity for FEMA's National Incident Management Assistance Team, and more. Our members of AmeriCorps NCCC, Conservation Corps North Carolina, part of AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams, which are our programs that are nationally deployable resources and recognized in the emergency management community as leaders in volunteer management, are working alongside agencies like the American Red Cross to support shelters, mucking and gutting of homes, removing debris, conducting needs assessments, and more. As our members have done so for the past 30 years, AmeriCorps will continue to answer the call and recruit more to serve in times of tragedy and triumph – and we will be there for our neighbors in need long after the storms have passed. Thank you to everyone who is helping our communities recover and rebuild. Bit.ly/BlogOct31 #NationalService #Helene #Disaster #Careers

AmeriCorps CEO Michael D. Smith met with education officials from around the country at this year’s Council of Urban Boards of Education, #CUBE24 conference to talk about how AmeriCorps strives to break barriers and expand opportunities for youth and families in underserved communities. The CUBE conference is an annual opportunity for urban school board leaders to gain knowledge and skills to be effective in their fight for equity in public education and address the unique challenges facing urban education systems. From early education to high school, more than 54,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers have carried out activities that contributed to school readiness and K-12 success in 10,000 schools, and in hundreds of out-of-school and summer programs last year. https://Bit.ly/CUBEpvsa #NationalService #Education #Event #Cube

"More Americans feel hesitant about four-year college these days. The high cost of tuition, the high dropout rates, and the high percentage – more than 40 percent – of recent graduates who are underemployed, working jobs that don't really call for a bachelor's degree are just a few top concerns," said author and Los Angeles Times editorial writer Karin Klein. In her recently published book, Rethinking College: A Guide to Thriving Without a Degree, Karin explores career opportunities for young adults outside of a traditional college setting and how various pathways, like volunteer work, allow young adults to explore their strengths, interests, and passions.
