Meet Colby, our AmeriCorps member, stationed at the Cherokees for Black Indian History Preservation Foundation. CBIHP is a Cherokee history and culture organization located in Tahlequah, Okla. Colby supports their mission to preserve the Native American narrative with primary emphasis on understanding Black Indian History. With an eye on the future, the Foundation's central goal is to keep Native American history and culture alive through education, promotion and community outreach for present and future generations. Colby found his voice while making a difference for those closest to him. AmeriCorps joins the nation in celebrating and honoring Indigenous Peoples' Day for their valuable contributions. Our members, AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers, partners, and grantees are committed to ensuring we meet the unique needs of Native and Tribal communities through national service every day: ?? Members like Colby, serving in AmeriCorps VISTA with Cherokees for the Black Indian History Preservation Foundation, help preserve and keep Native American history and culture alive through education, promotion, and community outreach for present and future generations. ?? AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer Karen is part of the Navajo Nation and serves in the Foster Grandparent program. Karen volunteers to help the next generation preserve and continue the traditions and culture of the tribe. ?? During the 2024 AmeriCorps State and National Symposium, the Chinle Chapter of the Navajo Nation received the first-ever Native and Indigenous Leadership in Service Award for the program's transformative initiatives in health, infrastructure, and disaster relief, making a profound difference in their community. ?? After the Slide Ranch Fire broke out on the Yakama Nation reservation, damaging homes, the AmeriCorps NCCC Red 2 team serving with Village of Hope immediately shifted to disaster response efforts. The members gathered donations, transported them to the community, and prepared meals for community members impacted by the fire and wildland firefighters engaged in containment efforts. ?? Our member of Public Health AmeriCorps, Desirae, serves with the American Heart Association. From teaching self-monitoring to patients with elevated or high blood pressure to providing patient navigation support to assist tribal members in accessing benefits and services, Desirae ensures the Apache Nation community is connected to public health resources. Our AmeriCorps members with Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management are making sure no community is left behind in the aftermath of #HurricaneHelene. I-DIEM's Equity Response Team mobilized in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina to support equitable response and recovery efforts for under-resourced, and marginalized communities impacted by the storm. From developing resources, providing equity and vulnerability assessments to logistics and communications, our members are ensuring underserved areas receive the resources they need. I-DIEM works with diverse communities post-disaster to identify inequities, re-direct key resources, build sustainable relationships, and reduce the timeframe for recovery.
