Since 1994, inspired people from across America have brought to St. Louis their enthusiasm, their talents and a commitment to serve their country. AmeriCorps St. Louis has distinguished itself as one of the leading AmeriCorps programs in the nation through a long and impressive history. Each year the program recruits nearly 40 Members to serve as part of our Emergency Response Team. In all, AmeriCorps St. Louis Members have committed more than three million hours of service – getting things done for St. Louis and the nation. The impact of AmeriCorps St. Louis on the region, on its Members, and on those who benefit from its services, is profound. Our region’s natural habitats are preserved for future generations by the Emergency Response Team. Communities, neighborhoods, and agencies are organized into new collaborations to provide more effective disaster preparedness programs. Families in their darkest hours are given relief after a disaster strikes. For those who serve as AmeriCorps Members, the desire to give back does not end after one year. Former members are significantly more likely to enter careers in public service, many devoting their lives to disaster response, military service, natural resource conservation, or social work. The St. Louis region benefits from the many alums of our program that remain in the area, revitalizing the city through their commitment to the community and its residents.

AmeriCorps Members are living examples of service and dedication. They fight fires, respond to disasters, and enhance environmental areas. You may not wear the boots on the ground, but your support is equally critical in propelling this mission forward. According to the EPA, Americans, on average, spend approximately 90% of their time indoors. Our Members spend the majority of their service term outside improving parks and trails. Choose your Challenge - Complete 30 miles of walking/running/hiking/biking OR spend 30 minutes outside every day for 30 days. Progress toward your Challenge goal can be recorded throughout the month of April. The challenge officially kicks off April 1st, registration is now live! I visited the Americorp Shelter in Soulard. 60 cots and meals. Ann Hannan said, "We activate at 25F or below on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. I asked Ann how Think BIG Unhoused Initiative empowering House Everyone STL helped them? Ann said, "The unpredictability of winter weather makes planning for winter difficult. The flexibility of the funding allows us to be ready for whatever type of winter may come." Think BIG & House Everyone created "Winter Flex" funding last August so service providers could plan in advance for winter. $200K invested, 200 beds!

When our friends at Nestlé Purina North America heard about how many guests we had coming to our emergency shelter with their dogs - they took quick action to make sure these pups were taken care of. Purina has been a longtime partner of AmeriCorps St. Louis, and we are so grateful they continue to support efforts to keep people & pets together during these dangerously cold nights. We are now well stocked on food, treats, beds, kennels, travel bowls, and poop bags for the rest of the winter! Wanna meet these dogs? Come volunteer with us!
