关于我们
For 45 years, we have been a beacon of health and hope for communities worldwide, confronting pressing health challenges. Established in 1979, we are a health-focused humanitarian organization dedicated to responding to people affected by poverty, disaster, and inequity with life-changing health programs, medicine, and supplies. Our mission is to help people and communities access health in times of disaster and every day. We envision pathways to health and opportunity for all, driven by our commitment to sustainable solutions and treating people as they want to be treated. To date, we have provided over $20 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the US. We distribute over $900 million in medicine and supplies to 90 countries each year. Over the next five years, we aim to help 100 million people gain access to quality healthcare. Let’s make health happen for everyone, everywhere.

After #HurricaneHelene struck western North Carolina, health workers demonstrated extraordinary dedication, overcoming immense challenges to care for their communities, even while coping with their own losses. But after a few weeks, the adrenaline inevitably runs out. And those frontline workers who were steadfast in the emergency rooms and shelters now need emotional support. That’s why #Americares deploys disaster mental health specialists to health centers like Mercy Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine in #Asheville to help first responders and health workers heal from the psychological impacts of major emergencies. By supporting the well-being of health workers, Americares ensures they can continue to care for others while recovering themselves. #MentalHealth #NorthCarolina

Once Hurricane Helene passed and residents of western North Carolina emerged to assess the damage, one by one, health workers made their way to work despite power outages, road closures—even personal loss. One clinic employee, determined to help patients, hiked miles to report to work in Asheville only to find the health center, which had no running water or phone service, closed. I have seen this dedication among frontline health workers and first responders after disasters all over the world. And when I was in North Carolina to see Helene’s impact firsthand, it was no different. Standing alongside these remarkable health workers, I saw not only their resilience but also the toll this crisis has taken on them—these frontline workers were survivors themselves, yet they still put their communities first. After a few weeks, the adrenaline inevitably runs out. And those frontline workers who seemed unflappable in the emergency rooms and shelters treating physical wounds now need emotional support. That’s why Americares deploys disaster mental health specialists to help first responders and health workers heal from the psychological impacts of major hurricanes, earthquakes and other emergencies. At Mercy Urgent Care in Asheville, I spoke with Rachel Sossoman, MBA, FACHE, who shared how the weight of the crisis is affecting her staff. When Americares brought the team together to learn coping strategies and begin building psychological resilience, she described it as watching “a light of hope” enter the room. “It helps reassure them that they are not alone—that we are all taking care of one another,” she said. For many staff, it was the first time they felt okay sharing their grief. “They gave us permission to talk about personal losses,” another team member told me. Americares has provided support to all eight Mercy Urgent Care locations, offering individual and group emotional well-being sessions to help staff manage the dual burden of caring for others while coping with their own stress and recovery needs. Mental health is health—it’s integral to physical well-being. As we help communities recover, we must also care for the caregivers who show up every day. When we prioritize the well-being of health workers and first responders, we help them live full, meaningful lives, both for themselves, for their loved ones and for their communities. #MentalHealth #HurricaneHelene #Asheville #LetsHealWNC
