Disinformation doesn’t just spread—it spreads fast. What starts in fringe corners of the internet can quickly find its way into mainstream media and even ‘trusted’ sources. The rapid spread of false narratives makes it harder to know what information to trust. Read our report to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gsg8q646

“Why do politicians lie? The answer is: Because it works.” Bill Adair, founder of PolitiFact, writes in his book “Beyond the Big Lie” how disinformation cripples our political discourse and public trust in government: https://lnkd.in/e678eS-a

ASP CEO Nina Jankowicz presented critical insights on gender and identity-based disinformation in Europe at the 2nd edition of the European External Action Service event dedicated to identity-based threats. Gender and identity-based disinformation causes real-world harm and danger to those it affects, promotes hate, silences targets, and often hides a larger geopolitical agenda. Nina emphasized the importance of global cooperation to protect vulnerable communities from these insidious threats.

NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy / Secrétaire Générale Adjointe de l’OTAN en charge de la diplomatie publique
???????? #NATO-EEAS : grateful for our indispensable cooperation on countering information threats at a time when the defenders’ community is faced with many challenges. ?? This 2??nd edition of the European External Action Service event dedicated to identity-based disinformation was timely and motivating. It was a privilege to share the stage with Stella Ronner-Grubacic #EU Ambassador for #Gender?& #Diversity and to see our personal as well as institutional commitments resonate closely. Identity-based tactics play a distinct role in aggravating information threats, because : ??they cause human harm ??they encourage hate speech and harassment ??they isolate their targets and try to silence them ??they may appear personal & non-political at first glance, while serving a clear geopolitical agenda by discrediting key opinion formers. ??Just 1?? month after Allies adopted it, I updated partners on NATO’s approach to countering information threats. ??We are proud that the founding principles of the NATO approach are clearly articulated around interoperability, cooperation and a whole of society approach ??And that our agreed document includes a paragraph dedicated to gender-based manipulation of information. ?? NATO’s Women, Peace and Security agenda relies on the fact that women and girls are disproportionately victims of wars and conflicts. Cognitive warfare is no exception to this rule. Women are targeted in a very specific way. This fact has inspired our current campaign “Women versus Disinfo” highlighting the work of exceptional women. ??At NATO, we consider information threats from a security angle. As a result, we consider them as : -a national security issue -a collective defence issue -a resilience issue -a societal issue directly related to the founding values of the Alliance. ???? NATO is committed to countering information threats not only because it is a primary target for information manipulation, but because Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to conjure a massive amount of these strategic and devastating activities. Recent work with Ukrainian military gender advisors have confirmed what the 2023 report of the EEAS had exposed very well: that military personnel are regularly targeted by specific gender-based & identity-based information threats, whether women or LGIBTQ+ ????? Great respect for the work produced by the all the attendants. ???? to Nina Jankowicz for being determined and inspirational. ???? Huge congrats to the EEAS for -convening us/strengthening this community -?? providing us with these new OSINT Guidelines for Identity-Based Disinformation/FIMI (IBD): an absolutely priceless repository of tools for a structured approach ???? Reflecting on Trump’s rhetoric about women this past election cycle, Nina Jankowicz tells WIRED. “Well beyond the presidential race, these sorts of attacks aim to denigrate women and their value as human beings, and aim to encourage women to stay out of politics and public life. They have no place in our politics.” https://lnkd.in/dzsaYtwV

Foreign interference and disinformation are surging on social media platforms, where safeguards have fallen off. As Nina Jankowicz points out, the stakes couldn’t be higher: we need platforms that prioritize transparency, not profit. #Election2024 https://lnkd.in/ecbd5HWH
