?? Advocating for Indigenous Language Access in Healthcare ?? This weekend, our CEO and Founder, Jace Norton, will be in Chicago at the Americans Against Language Barriers conference hosted by the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. The title of his presentation is: “The ‘Limited Spanish Proficient’ Problem: Improving Language Accessibility in Healthcare for Speakers of Indigenous Languages.” At Maya Bridge, we are proud to advocate for visibility and access for all non-dominant languages, including Mayan and other Indigenous languages, across all sectors. True language access doesn’t mean only getting to a person’s second language in which they often have limited proficiency. Individuals with “Limited Dominant Language Proficiency” should be treated the same as individuals with “Limited English Proficiency”—everyone deserves to be able to speak in their native language, regardless of what language it is. Stay tuned for insights from the conference as we continue to push for improved language accessibility for all communities. #LanguageServices #Guatemala #Interpretation #IndigenousLanguages #IndigenousLanguageAccess #Mayan #MayanLanguages #Qeqchi #Kekchi #Kiche #Quiche #Mam #Qanjobal #Kanjobal #Akateko #Chuj #Ixil #Kaqchikel #Cakchiquel #Poqomchi #Achi #Tzutujil #Chinanteco #Chalchiteko #Tlapaneco #Zapoteco #Chinantec #Chalchitec #Mixteco #Mixe #Ayuuk #Tzoztil #Tzeltal #Tsotsil #Tseltal #Chatino #Amuzgo #Tojolabal #Tektiteko #Awakateco #Aguacateco #Quechua #foreignlanguage #languagelearning #language #languages

Director, Office for Civil Rights U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

Today we announced the issuance of a Letter of Finding and Notice of Violation against the San Juan Capestrano Hospital, for violating disability civil rights laws when it failed to provide a patient with a sign language interpreter, under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Section 504) and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (Section 1557), laws which prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability. When I visited Puerto Rico earlier this year, we kept hearing how important it was to ensure civil rights for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and how rampant these issues were on the island.
