American BioCarbon participated in Climate Week NYC 2024. Julia Taylor, Director of Corporate Affairs, spoke on a panel about "Lessons Learned" at the Puro.earth CDR Summit. Julia addressed barriers faced by carbon credit suppliers like American BioCarbon, emphasizing the need for standardized project design and reporting requirements. In response to carbon market skepticism, stakeholders have developed rigorous criteria for evaluating carbon removal credits (CORCs). Julia noted, "All of the separate entities conducting due diligence claim to have the most discerning criteria in an effort to gain the trust of potential carbon credit buyers." She observed that they often ask similar questions in different formats. "Not only is this inefficient and costly, but it also perpetuates mistrust of the industry. We should be collaborating to build confidence in the integrity of carbon markets as a whole, not competing to be trusted exclusively, which signals mistrust of other members of the CDR community." Julia compared the fragmented certification process to hand-writing multiple college application essays. "Now, of course, a common application simplifies the competitive process for our teenagers. Let's do the same for carbon removal projects, who we are all counting on to make a significant contribution to climate change mitigation." American BioCarbon plans to lead a collaborative initiative to design and test a consolidated, standardized CDR questionnaire for credits generated by biochar producers, which currently account for 90% of market supply. “Help us accelerate the pace of change by creating a more efficient and transparent system.” Thanks to Puro.earth for organizing the panel and giving us the opportunity to initiate this important dialogue. "The Biden-Harris Administration recognizes that the future of VCMs and their ability to effectively address climate change depends on a well-functioning market that links a supply of high-integrity credits to high-integrity demand from credible buyers”. The Principles are: 1?? Carbon credits and the activities that generate them should meet credible atmospheric integrity standards and represent real decarbonization. 2?? Credit-generating activities should avoid environmental and social harm and should, where applicable, support co-benefits and transparent and inclusive benefits-sharing. 3?? Corporate buyers that use credits (“credit users”) should prioritize measurable emissions reductions within their own value chains. 4?? Credit users should publicly disclose the nature of purchased and retired credits. 5?? Public claims by credit users should accurately reflect the climate impact of retired credits and should only rely on credits that meet high integrity standards. 6?? Market participants should contribute to efforts that improve market integrity. 7?? Policymakers and market participants should facilitate efficient market participation and seek to lower transaction costs.
