1099-K Tax Rules: What You Need to Know About Payments via Venmo or PayPal A recent?CNBC?article sheds light on the updated IRS Form 1099-K reporting requirements, which will impact millions of taxpayers. Previously, only self-employed workers who earned at least $20,000 through Venmo, PayPal, CashApp, Stripe, and similar platforms received a 1099-K form, used to report income from payment apps, online marketplaces, or gift cards. However, in 2021, Congress reduced the reporting threshold from $20,000 and 200 transactions annually to just $600 for a single transaction. This new “$600 rule” will be phased in over the next three years: Tax Year 2024: $5,000 minimum Tax Year 2025: $2,500 minimum Tax Year 2026: $600 minimum Regardless of whether you receive a 1099-K, any funds collected through payment apps for selling goods, providing services, or renting property must be reported to the IRS.
