Professional Archaeology with Military Precision

关于我们

American Veterans Archaeological Recovery (AVAR) conducts expert archaeological fieldwork worldwide by combining the drive and precision of military veterans with academic training and supervision. Bonds made on excavations help veterans work through feelings of isolation, disempowerment, and loss of purpose that often occur when service members transition into the civilian world. While our program primarily serves disabled veterans, our emphasis is on ability. We work diligently to create a program that accommodates a diverse community of veterans. Unique in the United States, the AVAR program helps veterans find their future while exploring the past. We describe the enhancement of archaeological fieldwork processes to benefit and develop the participant over the long-term as ‘Rehabilitation Archaeology’.

  • We are proud to announce that U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Allan W. Knepper, 27, of Lewiston, Idaho, killed during World War II, has been accounted for. The AVAR team completed two Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency missions in search of 2nd Lt. Knepper in the Summer of 2021 and Spring of 2022. "On July 10, Knepper departed El Bathan Airfield, Tunisia, in his P-38 “Lightning” as one of many fighter waves assigned to attack enemy forces near Caltagirone, Italy, and neutralize Axis air powers. In attempts to obstruct Axis movements from the island’s interior toward the beach where Allied forces were landing, U.S. air forces were dispatched every 30 minutes throughout the day. Knepper’s squadron encountered heavy anti-aircraft fire, and another pilot witnessed Knepper’s aircraft veer suddenly skyward before rolling halfway over and plummeting to the ground. There was no witness of any deployed parachute following the crash, and it was believed he was still in the plane when it crashed. Knepper’s remains were not recovered, and he was subsequently declared missing in action." You can read more about his story here: https://lnkd.in/gFSbBVYs Congratulations to our teams and to the other partners who worked diligently to bring 2nd Lt. Knepper home. #wwiihistory #WWIIveteran #veteransarchaeology #missinginaction #archaeology #WWIIArchaeology #P38Lightning #operationhusky

Tomorrow we're starting our inaugural online speaker presentations, the AVAR Mentor Series! AVAR members and recent applicants, check your emails for the link. #avar #veterans #archaeology #military

AVAR Members (old, new, and in-processing), check your emails! We're starting our inaugural online speaker presentations, the AVAR Mentor Series! ~ Since 2016, AVAR has known that American veterans have the potential to be outstanding field archaeologists, however, progression pathways in this career field are confusing and often unclear and can be particularly difficult to navigate for individuals who grew up within the structured military environment. The AVAR Mentor Series will allow us to draw on the experience of our outstanding partners and supporters across the discipline to give our veterans the best chance to succeed. While these presentations are aimed primarily at veterans looking to pursue careers in archaeology, we believe that all our veterans will benefit from a better understanding of how the discipline functions and how they, and AVAR, fit into it. ~ Our first presentation is in less than two weeks! ~ AVAR and the Way Ahead AVAR has grown since its creation in 2016 and has evolved to meet the unique needs of American veterans AND to better showcase the strengths we (veterans) bring into the field. This presentation is aimed at keeping our vets looped in on AVAR's 'Big Picture'—what we're doing, why we're doing the way we are, and where we're going in the future...and with that in mind, it will include updates on our 2024 field season! #avar #veterans #archaeology #military
