AI and chatbots are all the talk these days. Some of the language professionals see them as a threat. We see them as an opportunity. Especially when competitors use them as the first line of communication with customers. And then, if they don’t realize the results of the customer support went to hell in a handbasket, we will market an all-HUMAN approach as a better solution. While many big corporations are happy to provide their customers with the worst of user experiences to cut a few people off the payroll and attempt to increase profit margins, others might realize the benefit of humans is better. Here is a recent Chat AI experience with Booking(DOT)com after getting stuck in a loop of no resolve and resorting to cussing words… Helpbot AI: ?? Sorry I can’t understand inappropriate language. If you have a question related to managing your property, I’ll be happy to help you. You can also type menu to see a list of topics I’ve been trained to answer. Me: menu Helpbot AI: Oops. Can you please rephrase or repeat? ?? I am still learning so please use simple terms. As you can see, the user experience is the worst possible result. Helpbot AI even likes to use emojis to appear to have emotional content. This leads to serious customer dissatisfaction and the business goes to the next provider with better service and better communication. This is the opportunity we see! How can we have artificial intelligence when real intelligence is lacking? Even Linkedin offers us to Rewrite with AI. Most of what we are experiencing will soon be more artificial than real. That does not feel come across as very authentic, does it?

I am human. A machine cannot be human. What’s the difference? If inaccuracy and misleading are considered characteristics of AI, why would you consider it to be reliable? Have integrity? Be trustworthy? Can AI have sincerity? Is there a tolerance level to competency? Can AI use judgment? Does AI have independent decision-making skills? Can AI be proactive and work with only minimal direction and supervision? #Human?#communication?is quite different than?#computer?#language.?#Demonstratives?and?#indexicals#context?#visuallanguage?#referents?#cultural?significance play a big role in human language and comprehension.? #linguistics?at a higher level of importance will not be easily replaced by?#machinetranslation

#Multilingual #Forensic #Transcription and #Translation is one of the more complex displays of language analysis in linguistics. Strangely enough, I, Scott Crystal, like doing this type of work as it is the most engaging way of breaking down communication and analyzing it meticulously. Maybe because my aunt Rene Crystal was such a good stenographer, this is in my genes. Let's see why I love it. The highest level of scrutiny goes behind each deliverable file because it is evidence. This means there is no margin for error or the whole thing can be thrown out. The Translation Key is used as a small glossary of linguistic conventions. Underlined = Original spoken in English. (PARENTHESIS) = Background noise and/or information about time and events as well as the translator’s notes. Italics = Indicates a telephonic conversation within a body or Kel recording. [U]... = Unintelligible, when words were heard as spoken, but cannot be specifically deciphered. [I]... = Inaudible, when words cannot be heard. [UX]... = Unintelligible exchange between two or more parties when voices overlap. {he/she/it/them/you/etc.} = Undetermined words or possessive pronouns due to [U]..., [I]... or [UX]... The following is paraphrased from “Interpreting Evidentiary Tape Recordings: The Toughest Job You’ll Ever Love, Or Maybe Not…” By Diane E. Teichmann, in ATA Chronicle, February 2000, p 26-29. [U]… = Unintelligible, “when words were heard as spoken, but cannot be specifically deciphered." [I]… = Inaudible, “when words cannot be heard." Aside from the proper annotation of the verbatim, you have to be able to contextualize the remainder of what is comprehensive. And then there is identifying the Participants, as identifiable and even those that are unidentifiable, are indicated on the cover page with an abbreviation that will be seen through the conversations in the second column from the left. Any linguist can only identify a Participant if they have circumstantial evidence through the recording. The Judge, Jury, and Expert Witnesses can identify #Participants through Direct Comparison, #Exemplar Comparison, or Direct Identification #Testimony otherwise the Participants should be left as generic semantic choices like MV1 (Male Voice 1), MV2 (Male Voice 2), FV1 (Female Voice 1), FV2 (Female Voice 2), UV (Unidentified Voice), etc… A #spectrographical analysis is another method of identifying Participants. At American Translation Partners we use a proprietary audio metrics worksheet to evaluate the speed of #speakers, quality of sound, and percentage of dead audio time in a matrix worksheet to come up with an estimate. Using a formula of factors to estimate 1 minute of source audio will take X amount of time #drafting, #reviewing formatting the #verbatim, then #translating, #reviewing, #formatting for #foreign #language #locutions into English, and #project management. Some projects involve as many as 20 steps to get ready for jurat #notarization and #certification.

MIT Partners - 2024 IT Partners Conference on Tuesday, June 11 ATP will have a booth as a preferred vendor for the event. Learn about what we offer for language services for IT specialists @ MIT with respect to CLARA (C-L-A-R-A > Communication of Languages Assisted by Remote Access), MAHT, and HAMT. Also, be open to discussing pragmatism in linguistics within the constructs of AI, Machine Translation, and ChatGPT. First, let’s define Pragmatics. It is a field of linguistics concerned with breaking down the variables that contribute to the intention of locutions and comprehension of them. One speaker implies, and another listener infers based on contributing factors like the situational context, the individuals’ mental states, the preceding dialogue, and other elements. #linguistics #pragmatism #AI #chapgpt #MAHT #HAMT #CLARA #MT #digital #transformations #MIT #IT

AI is a hot topic, and many people use it as an alternative to humans doing jobs. There is much to be said about what AI can provide to help humanity, but the ability of AI to comprehend and express subtle nuances is another aspect altogether. #Human #communication is quite different than #computer #language. #Demonstratives and #indexicals #context #visuallanguage #referents #cultural significance play a big role in human language and comprehension. #linguistics at a higher level of importance will not be easily replaced by #machinetranslation

Do you solemnly swear or affirm that you will make an accurate, complete, and impartial interpretation from the English language into (target language) and vice-versa, of all communications during this proceeding using your best skill, judgment, and ability and that you will abide by the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility for administrative and judiciary interpreters, [if applicable in case of persons who are deaf or hard of hearing: and the RID Code of Professional Conduct] and so you do swear or affirm? This is the Interpreter’s Oath For Administrative Proceedings. How does a person taking an oath compare to AI? Can AI lie?
