One of the primary lessons we learned during COVID is that the CDC and state public health labs are Not “commercial reference labs” capable of ramping up for thousands of daily or weekly tests. Those labs primary mission to to provide expertise for surveillance and assistance for difficult cases and lending help for testing. It is important that we are prepared to pivot to large reference labs during pandemic and large outbreaks like we are witnessing now with the TX #measles outbreak. This ALSO serves as a reminder that hospital #MedicalLaboratory & #PublicHealth professionals have Serious #workforce shortages and other major funding needs that need to be ongoing and sustainable at ALL times - even during quiet times!
