NEW SCIENCE ?? ?? New research in Science Magazine reveals that overfishing has driven shark, ray, and chimaera populations down by more than 50% since 1970 ?? A 50-year Red List Index analysis of 1,199 species shows a 19% increase in extinction risk ?? Overfishing the largest species could erode 5-22% of functional diversity in ocean ecosystems ?? Extinction risk is higher in countries with dense coastal populations but lower where strong governance and sustainable fisheries management exist ? Twenty years ago, the small number of people who then comprised the IUCN Species Survival Commission IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group (SSG), sounded the alarm: sharks and rays were in increasing demand for the growing fin trade, and they needed to be on the conservation map. Earlier this week, the SSG has published its update in the form of a 2,000-page report that reflects the scale of change in two decades of marine science and conservation – and in the status of sharks, rays and chimaeras. https://lnkd.in/ebR5cnhF
