关于我们
Founded in 1948, the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE) is a private, nonprofit organization composed of educational and cultural institutions, professional scholars, and private individuals. Through grants, fieldwork and field schools, ARCE’s partnership with Egyptians contributes to the shared goal of cultural heritage preservation. Over the years, ARCE’s strong relationship with the Ministry of Antiquities (MOA) (formerly the Supreme Council of Antiquities) has ensured the success of our work together. ARCE’s mission is to support research on all aspects of Egyptian history and culture; to protect, preserve and promote Egyptian cultural heritage; and to strengthen American-Egyptian cultural collaboration.

?? New topic article: Ibn Nubātah al-Mi?rī’s elegiac poetry offers a poignant exploration of personal grief and loss, deeply rooted in Mamlūk society. His two elegies, written for a concubine who passed away in the 14th century, skillfully blend poetic tradition with intimate sorrow. The vivid descriptions of his loved one's physical beauty contrast with the raw emotional intensity of mourning, as he reflects on the fleeting nature of life and the permanence of loss. ? Through his words, Ibn Nubātah brings a personal yet universal experience into a shared space, where grief becomes both a private lament and a collective expression, as explored by Jack Bettar, a student at the University of Technology Sydney. Check out the incredible history of the Al-Salih Tala’i Mosque's minbar! This stunning piece, dating back to the 13th century, is the second oldest Mamluk minbar in Cairo and has seen extensive restoration throughout the years. Starting with its original assembly by Amir Baktīmur al-Juqand?r and continuing through the modern conservation efforts carried out by a team of specialists in 1998-99. The conservation team undertook detailed restoration work on the minbar, enhancing its inner structure, building a new base, cleaning and repairing its decorative features, restoring its dome, and preserving the Qibla wall. This remarkable wooden pulpit tells a story of craftsmanship, preservation, and architectural evolution. Discover the fascinating layered restoration history of the Al-Salih Tala'i minbar, along with the conservation techniques and expert assessments involved through on our archives website: https://lnkd.in/dMZ4sk2c #IslamicArt #HistoricCairo #Mosque #WoodConservation #Minbar #Pulpit #MamlukArchitecture #HeritageConservation #CairoHistory #MosqueRestoration #ArtHistory #Archaeology #CulturalPreservation #Woodwork #ArchitecturalHistory

The 2023 season of the Mastaba of Akhmerutnisut Documentation Project (MAD-P) focused on Giza's mastaba G 2184, belonging to Fifth Dynasty official Akhmerutnisut. Excavated in 1912, the tomb had been poorly documented, with only brief studies later. This Luso-Brazilian project, led by Dr. Inês Torres and Dr. Luiza Osorio G. da Silva (assistant director), aimed to assess the tomb’s state and document its architecture and decorations, many previously unrecorded. The team discovered fragments of decoration, offering insights into the tomb’s construction and possible connections to Akhmerutnisut’s family. This AEF project is vital for preserving Egypt’s elite Old Kingdom tombs, often overshadowed by pyramids. Read about it on our website: https://lnkd.in/dWYFxZZX All images ? Today marks the United Nations' World Tourism Resilience Day! Tourism is a cornerstone of Egypt's economy, and at ARCE, we contribute by ensuring the long-term preservation of its cultural treasures. While we focus on conservation, preservation and research, our work supports sustainable tourism by safeguarding the sites visitors love. Fun fact: did you know that in 2024, Egypt welcomed 14.9 million international visitors and brought in record revenues of $14.1 billion? Celebrate with us by exploring our library's collection, including these key work which can be found in our library: "Tourism at World Heritage Cultural Sites: The Site Manager's Handbook" (ICOMOS, 1993), "Managing Quality Cultural Tourism" (Priscilla Boniface, 1995) and "Tourism in Sinai (1980)" ?? #UN #Tourism #TourismResilience #Egypt #ARCE #archaeology #heritage

Oh, how times have changed. The science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field was largely dominated by men, as was archaeology back in the day. Nowadays, women are making brilliant strides in science, becoming role models in their own rights, and closing the gap in science ?? At ARCE, we’ve had the pleasure of supporting many generations of wonderful experts in archaeobotany, conservation, sustainable preservation, and more ?????? We’re also keen to support the next generation! For the 10th International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, we’re highlighting 3 special books – on reproduction, dentistry & osteology – authored by experts, and housed in our library at ARCE.
