New research from the AMA Journal of Marketing reveals key insights into how owned social media impacts both engagement and sales. Based on a meta-analysis of 86 studies across 31 industries, 14 platforms, and 17 countries, we found that owned social media has a stronger effect on sales than engagement – contrary to popular belief. Key takeaways: ?? Emotional content drives engagement (think funny or heartfelt posts). Informational content (product benefits, details) drives sales. ?? Building small brand communities can be more effective than large, broad audiences. ?? Social networks like Facebook & Instagram are more effective for engagement than microblogs like Twitter. ?? Advertising on platforms may reduce the effectiveness of owned social content on engagement. ?? Tailor your strategy to geographical differences: mobile penetration and cultural factors like power distance can amplify the impact on sales.
